We travelled to Peterhof on the hydrofoil, because we wanted to approach it from the sea. We booked a return ticket because it was cheaper and we reckoned it would save queuing up twice. The crowds at the terminal outside the Heremitage were frightening. There were no orderly queues at all and it was a complete free for all. Tour... more

As others have said already, get the hyrofoil outside The Winter Palace, the quickest & easiest way to get there. Not scenic after a few minutes but gets you there without any traffic problems. When you arrive immediately go to the cabin and book your tickets for the reuturn trip at your desired time as that time slot could be... more

I think that every reviewer comments about the gardens and the fountains. They are spectacular. No doubt about that. Well worth the time and money. The tour of the palace, at least as compared to the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, I found a little disappointing and so I wouldn't recommend it. With the exception of the first few rooms,... more

When visiting this definite must-see St Petersburg suburb, book a tour to the Grotto (at the Grand Cascade). Frst, you'll learn about the amazing mechanics of the Petergof's fountains (no pumps or hydromechanical devices at all - can you imagine that?!), and see parts of it with your own eyes. Next, you'll get a "first-hand experience" of Peter the Great's... more

We travelled out to Peterhof on the hydrofoil which departs from just outside the Winter Palace. This turned out to be a very quick and convenient way to travel without getting stuck in traffic. We didn't have a guide, but as we had only limited time available we decided to get a cycle rickshaw tour of the gardens. This was... more

What an extravagant display of royal wealth! Nevertheless, the best part of Peterhof is its enormous gardens and the hundreds of fountains. If you have only limited time available, see only the lower and upper gardens, as the palace itself is splendid by itself, but not a par to the magnificent gardens (not to mention the considerable higher cost to... more

First of all, let me just say that Peterhof is awesome! The fountains are superb and if you get a sunny day the grounds are a joy to walk around. Now the bad news - make sure you hang on to your belongings whenever in a crowd - I know it sounds silly, as most people are vigilant, but there... more

This palace and grounds were truly spectacular and should not be missed. We visited Peterhof on May 24, 2008 without a guide. We took a roundtrip hydrofoil trip (700 R per person) and left at 10AM. The hydrofoils leave near the dock across from the Hermitage Museum. The trip took about 30 minutes. Before entering the palace grounds we had... more

These beautiful gardens are worth a whole day. There are cafes, or take a picnic. The standard visit is 300 rubles for the lower gardens, but I wish I had also visited the upper gardens. Except in rough seas, take the half-hour hydrofoil. Note that the hydrofoil companies do not co-operate, and you must return on the one that sold... more

I had already been to several Petersburg area palaces, so I wasn't expecting to be as impressed by the extravagance of Peterhof as I was. The grounds are enormous, covered with dozens of paths, gilded buildings, flowers, trees, and fountains. O the fountains! Be sure you come here in the spring or summer when the fountains are running, because this... more
