This is probably the best "museum" I have ever been to. It is very difficult to find, hidden away in the university buildings but well worth the effort. The museum is free to enter and run by some women who work in a back room of the museum. It consists of 6 rooms which are Mendeleev's old flat in the university (he lived there for 24 years) and contains many originals of his work.
We were the only 2 visitors in the museum at the time and the lady gave us a guide book to go round the museum in English but then gave us a very detailed tour and personally explained what each item was and its' significance.
The museum contains incredible items from his first works at the university to his personal book collection in his library, personal items such as his glasses to his original copies of the periodic table. As a science lover this was incredible!!!!
I cannot recommend this museum more! I wish trip advisor would put this higher up the list of things to do in St. Petersburg so that more people could see this amazing museum. A hidden gem.

Museum rooms are on the ground floor of a university building, and were not technically open, but we hired a guide for the day, and she was able to find it with no problem and allow us access with no admission fee. This is a series of six rooms that were Mendeleyev's actual apartment and workspace, and the place was partly being cleaned/reorganized when we were there, but it was the highlight of our trip. Many inventions, book collections, hand-drawn maps, pages of experiments, and portraits of friends and colleagues were on display. Dusty and dark, but authentic and fascinating!

The address written at the top of this page took us easily to Mendeleev’s museum. I was one of the most interesting parts of our trip to Russia. I was really excited about seeing Mendeleev's living and working place and I strongly recommend visiting this museum to all science lovers.

Best museum ever for anyone interested in science! So awesome and staff are very helpful, though the museum itself was a little difficult to find.

Can you tell us what the hours of the museum are? I've looked on many sites and can't find that information. Thank you.
