Erarta building with an overall floor space of 8,600 sqm (currently being expanded to 10,200sqm) opened its doors in September 2010 but has already been nominated for Russia's museum of the year in its first year of existence. The Museum is especially worth visiting for its creativity, not only exhibiting other artists' works but also acting as an author itself with unique projects such as "U-Spaces" (total installations created by the Museum itself to immerse the viewer in a particular world), "Theatre with no actors" (the world's only multi-media play whose cast is made up exclusively of characters from paintings with special audio and video effects bringing them to life), "Art-literature" (accompanying essays of experts and regular visitors' thoughts about particular works of art, helping explain what kind of emotions they trigger in others), "Art-animation" (videos and cartoons transforming a two-dimensional painting into a story prolonged in time). Erarta building also has a restaurant, a cafe and several museum shops offering gifts, prints and books and is open every day (except for Tuesdays) from 10am to 10pm « less

Getting there: We walked/hiked there to see the sites en route (St. Isaacs colonnade, walk over the Neva, another church, submarine museum) and took the #11 trolley back (a block away from the museum and dropped us right off at the Hermitage … incredibly simple and fast). Being there: We expected to spend 2 hours or so and catch a... More

It is just the type of art which was shown. most of it was from the soviet time and not enough from today's artists. Since I always like to go to see modern art in the countries I have to do business as part as my introdcution to the touch and feel of the región, this museum realy did not... More

Dear Anthonie, thank you for taking the time to visit Erarta and for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that you got the impression that our collection is mostly from Soviet times as a vast chunk of it comes from contemporary artists living and working in today’s Russia, a list of whom numbers over 150 names. The collection includes artists... More

This modern building houses the largest private museum of contemporary art in Russia, it is staged over five floors and well worth a visit. It houses over 2,000 works created by more than 170 artists from throughout Russia. One side of the building houses the permanent exhibitions and the other the temporary exhibitions - in fact they say that if... More

It’s a pleasure to know that you’ve like our desserts. Proud to say that we have our own bakery and confectionery in Erarta. Besides the café there’s a... More

Despite its out-of-the-way location, the museum is dfinitely worth a visit, since it features what other classical attractions of St. Petersburg do not: contemporary Russian art. I suggest taking a metro to Vasileostrovskaya and then taking a bus 6 or tram 6 which goes along the Bolshoy VO prospekt and hopping off at 29-Liniya. The museum presents works by artist... More

Dear Marija C, Thank you for your feedback! We are proud to get such appreciation from a person that is really interested in contemporary art and visited museums of contemporary art in Europe. Besides the way you suggest, there’s a bus 7 and trolley-buses 10 and 11 which will bring you from Nevsky Prospect to 26th/27th Line. Just a 5... More

Though that is a little bit difficult for me to describe in short my opinion of contemporary art Erarta somehow manages to offer really interesting pieces of it and tells about people who absolutely deserve to be heard of. The place itself is very nice and so unlike other classic museums that are usually on tourists' agenda. Here you won't... More

Dear corona_borealis, Thank you for your feedback! We take pride in promotion of talented Russian artists regardless of their status in the art world and geographical location. All of them were carefully chosen to represent status quo of contemporary art in Russia and we are very happy that you’ve enjoyed their works! We are indeed very much different from the... More

This is a modern art museum, in Europe standarts. I hardly can find out more like this in St. Pete. They have permanent exposition, as well as temporary. Some of them are free. Nice place, strictly recommend. They have cafe/bar also, not expensive, and when summer time, open balcony also.

I don't like very much contemporary art, BUT the collection in this museum I have to admit that conquered me! The museum is very well organized, the staff is very helpful and english speaking, there's free WIFI in all the floors (5 floors with plenty of creativity!) It's a pleasure and also very educative: a special mention goes to the... More

It's a little way out. Infact it feels worse if you go and it's shut (Tuesdays - don't trust the Lonely Planet) but I'm so glad we made a repeat journey to this fantastic gallery. You can for ease catch the tram 10 or 11 from Nevsky Pr although with traffic it takes a bit of time and I'd recommend... More

Hidden down a suburban side-street, away from the main tourist drag in central St Petersburg, the Erarta contemporary art gallery is well worth seeking out. If you came to Russia looking for Russian art, the Erarta rather than the Hermitage is the museum to visit. After the crowded Hermitage, the Erarta offered a pleasurable, almost solitary experience (at least when... More

Dear Dromedaryman, thank you so much for your amazing feedback, it totally made our day! We went to this museum on my last day in St Petersburg. Just be aware that it is far from the city center - we took the Metro and then walked there. - took about an hour. On our return we took a small bus (that you flag down from anywhere on the main avenue) back to the Metro so... More

Hi shpap, thank you for your feedback. It is true that we are situated a bit off the beaten track, although it’s a nice walk from the subway and usually doesn’t take more than 25 mins.
