Erarta brings under one roof Russia's largest private Museum of Contemporary Russian Art (with over 2,000 works in its collection) and one of the branches of its international Galleries (others located in London, New York and Zurich). Erarta building with an overall floor space of 8,600 sqm (currently being expanded to 10,200sqm) opened its doors in September 2010 but has already been nominated for Russia's museum of the year in its first year of existence. The Museum is especially worth visiting for its creativity, not only exhibiting other artists' works but also acting as an author itself with unique projects such as "U-Spaces" (total installations created by the Museum itself to immerse the viewer in a particular world), "Theatre with no actors" (the world's only multi-media play whose cast is made up exclusively of characters from paintings with special audio and video effects bringing them to life), "Art-literature" (accompanying essays of experts and regular visitors' thoughts about particular works of art, helping explain what kind of emotions they trigger in others), "Art-animation" (videos and cartoons transforming a two-dimensional painting into a story prolonged in time). Erarta building also has a restaurant, a cafe and several museum shops offering gifts, prints and books and is open every day (except for Tuesdays) from 10am to 10pm

This place is amazing, unique and unbelievably cheap for Saint-Petersburg! Art is always changing, so you know that if you return next time, exhibitions will include lots of new elements, if not completely consist of them. Staff is very friendly and I personally felt strong bond between them and art they present, like living interest. I highly recommend this museum... More

My wife were pleasantly surprised at the museum. The art was modern and we like that it will be changing, since a lot of the exhibits are temporary. This museum we plan on visiting again when we return to the city next year.

Being a fan of modern art I was looking forward to this visit. Not located in central St. Petersburg and its a bit out of the way. Which isn't an issue should it have been a much more concise and edited collection. Found that the art was tightly placed without any thought to flow or space. Much of it not... More

Dear A M, thank you for your feedback! We were sorry to know that number of artworks in our collection seemed excessive. As you probably know, formation of Russian contemporary art was held in our country in a different way than worldwide. We had a single style which dominated called social realism. All avant-garde artistic practices were pushed to the... More

We, two friends, visited the Erata Museum of Contemporary Art because the Zoological Museum was closed. How lucky we were that it was! Upon arriving at the Erata we decided to have lunch before viewing the galleries. Neither of us was expecting anything exceptional, just a quick bite to eat. We ended up having the best meal during our 8... More

Excellent museum, a bit further from the centre but definitely worth the trip. A lot of religious and political criticism presented through modern art and also other exhibitions there really represent one of the best things i visited in sankt peterburg. If you have the opportunity, definitely visit it!!

Wonderful museum of modern Russian art. Non-state sponsored and attractive in every respect. Housed in a former five story warehouse this is as much of a must-see as the Hermitage. Located a bit from the city center it is still easy to get to and well worth the time. Don't miss the refreshment shop.
