Erarta brings under one roof Russia's largest private Museum of Contemporary Russian Art (with over 2,000 works in its collection) and one of the branches of its international Galleries (others located in London, New York and Zurich). Erarta building with an overall floor space of 8,600 sqm (currently being expanded to 10,200sqm) opened its doors in September 2010 but has already been nominated for Russia's museum of the year in its first year of existence. The Museum is especially worth visiting for its creativity, not only exhibiting other artists' works but also acting as an author itself with unique projects such as "U-Spaces" (total installations created by the Museum itself to immerse the viewer in a particular world), "Theatre with no actors" (the world's only multi-media play whose cast is made up exclusively of characters from paintings with special audio and video effects bringing them to life), "Art-literature" (accompanying essays of experts and regular visitors' thoughts about particular works of art, helping explain what kind of emotions they trigger in others), "Art-animation" (videos and cartoons transforming a two-dimensional painting into a story prolonged in time). Erarta building also has a restaurant, a cafe and several museum shops offering gifts, prints and books and is open every day (except for Tuesdays) from 10am to 10pm

Erarta isn't in the centre of St Petersburg, and in terms of attractions it isn't the most convenient to get to, but it is worth the trip. In fact, if you catch the No.10 trolleybus from Nevsky Prospekt it will drop almost outside the door. The gallery itself is very impressive and imposing. The inside is well-laid out with plenty... I should say - this is a must for modern arts lovers. 5 storeys of contemporary art . Galery is situated in a nicely restored and refurbished Stalin style building. main exposition houses numerous objects of modern Russian art, and temporary exhibitions are international. very good museum shop and a lovely restaurant in the basement with exotic, european and russian... Very much worth my 20-minute cab ride. Turns out Russia has a modern side that's very much worth seeing as well! The exhibits are fascinating and perhaps the biggest compliment I can pay to this museum is that it felt like I was browsing MoMA or TATE in terms of setup, quality and experience. Erarta is also home to the... More

I've seen pretty much everything there is to see in Russia but on this trip, Erarta was the most pleasant discovery that tops the overall experience charts. Fantastic, modern space with a diverse collection of art, full of wonderful, friendly people who you can immediately tell really want to share their own love and passion for Russian art with others.... Erarta is cutting edge museum that makes contemporary art accessible for anyone, and great for English speakers like myself. The staff are friendly and helpful and the curators have great taste. As an art enthusiast I have never come across anything like this - so original and gripping. For a bonus experience try the u-spaces and get lost in imagination.... More

An eye opening, interesting collection. Be sure to try the U-spaces, these immersive experiences cost extra but were the hightlight of our trip. We dressed up in costumes, entered a giant clothes dryer... And even better, the room is only open for you and your group during your 15min booking window. A must see museum for any modern art fans!

Dear Claire J, thank you for your feedback! Glad you’ve liked Erarta unique project U-Space. Designed by our artists, they immerse the viewer in a particular world. It’s not just total installations- it’s a 3D piece of art, which enables you to experience thoughts and emotions according to the theme. Right now there are 6 rooms, but soon we’ll open... More

This museum hosts different exibitions on different dates but it is impressive at any time. I especially enjoyed the 70+ artists' self-portraits. It is not in the town center like most other tourist attractions but the trip is worth it.

Dear StillBeingP, thank you for your feedback. Glad that you’ve mentioned our self-portrait gallery. It is a unique Erarta project. All self-portraits belong to artists whose works are in the permanent collection. They received identical canvases and just one task — to create their self-portraits. The result is a surprising variety of images and styles. That’s why the gallery of... More

WHY WORTH VISITING: it's the biggest privately owned museum for contemporary Russian art. The collection is located on 5 floors of an old Soviet building, one wind for the permanent stuff, the other for temporary exhibitions. Each floor is themed, which makes it even more interesting (especially if Russian contemporary art is something new for you personally). The quality of... More

Dear Olga C, thank you for your detailed feedback. No need to say how useful it will be for our future guests. However, it was a pity to know that you weren’t impressed by our unique project U-Space. You are absolutely right to say that they are difficult to describe. U-Space rooms are total installations, which are art-spaces, involving art... More

If you have time to see only one museum in St. Petersburg, this should be the one. Give your visit 3 hours and take the audioguide. The artwork is eye-opening and the narration in your audio-guide will give you introduction not just to modern Russian art, but to the history and life in this complex country. The building is brand... More

Dear KorenNegev, thank you for your feedback! It’s a pleasure to know that we should the one and the only museum for short-trip travelers. If you overdose from the vast number of ornate churches, museums, palaces (big and small) that consume your Baltic cruise, I strongly recommend the Erarta Musuem which presents a fine collection of Russian contemporary art on five, smallish floors in a tidy museum in St. Peterburg. This is a good selection of well regarded contemporary (starting fro 1945, I think)... More

Dear WolfG, thank you for your feedback. We are so glad you’ve enjoyed your time at Erarta. You are absolutely right saying that art on display at Erarta dates from the middle of 20th century.
