Erarta building with an overall floor space of 8,600 sqm (currently being expanded to 10,200sqm) opened its doors in September 2010 but has already been nominated for Russia's museum of the year in its first year of existence. The Museum is especially worth visiting for its creativity, not only exhibiting other artists' works but also acting as an author itself with unique projects such as "U-Spaces" (total installations created by the Museum itself to immerse the viewer in a particular world), "Theatre with no actors" (the world's only multi-media play whose cast is made up exclusively of characters from paintings with special audio and video effects bringing them to life), "Art-literature" (accompanying essays of experts and regular visitors' thoughts about particular works of art, helping explain what kind of emotions they trigger in others), "Art-animation" (videos and cartoons transforming a two-dimensional painting into a story prolonged in time). Erarta building also has a restaurant, a cafe and several museum shops offering gifts, prints and books and is open every day (except for Tuesdays) from 10am to 10pm « less

If you have time to see only one museum in St. Petersburg, this should be the one. Give your visit 3 hours and take the audioguide. The artwork is eye-opening and the narration in your audio-guide will give you introduction not just to modern Russian art, but to the history and life in this complex country. The building is brand... More

If you overdose from the vast number of ornate churches, museums, palaces (big and small) that consume your Baltic cruise, I strongly recommend the Erarta Musuem which presents a fine collection of Russian contemporary art on five, smallish floors in a tidy museum in St. Peterburg. This is a good selection of well regarded contemporary (starting fro 1945, I think)... More

Dear WolfG, thank you for your feedback. We are so glad you’ve enjoyed your time at Erarta. You are absolutely right saying that art on display at Erarta dates from the middle of 20th century. We visited the museum with the expectation of seeing a reasonable amount of works, but not more. We were VERY impressed and ended up saying the visit being one of the absolelute top-sights in Sankt Petersburg. The quality of the permanent exhibition was excelent and impressive and seeing the temporary exhibitions were great as well. Especially the "shoe" exhibition with... More

We spent about an hour, could be even more, and left with a very good feeling aboutthe whole museum. The shop was full of great items unlike most of the museum shops, and I was tempted quite a few times.

I really liked the style and inventory in the museum. There are couple of flats in the building - I'd recommend seeing all of them. The museum shop is also very nice and sells reproductions of the creations in the museum - I even bought one.

If you like contemporary art and have a bit of extra time, it is one of the places off the beaten path in Saint Petersburg you might want to consider. The museum is well planned and well designed, the collection is changing and expanding, there are events that become increasingly popular with the locals and visitors.

After visiting the Hermitage with all its bygone-era treasures a visit to Erarta is like a breath of fresh air. Here you will find Russian art at its most modern and innovative. Take a guided tour or walk around on your own. You'll be impressed!

I paid two trips to the Erarta Gallery and found it an exciting "living" space containing some excellent artworks and installations. Having visited the Hermitage earlier in the week you moved from passive storage to a Gallery of living work, well documented and supported by information sheets. The immediate impression is that it contains works by artists who are skilled... More

Dear Peter T, thank you so much for your feedback! We are so glad you’ve liked our collection. It’s absolutely right that Russian contemporary art is influenced by our history. And due to number of regions, represented by our artists, you can come closer to understanding Russians and what is called “Russian soul”. At the end of the year we’ll... More

Seems that contemporary Russian art is not world class on the whole. Sociologically and culturally interesting as way to get a little deeper into the Russian mind. But not a great Art experience. If I compare with China as another emerging transformational country there is not the same vibrancy and creativity. Lots and lots of painting. Little of other media.... More
