Great example of ancient Russian city! You can almost feel the history while walking inside this great monument. Take notice of the great monument in the center - the monument of Russia 1000 years. Germans wanted to destroy it during ww2, but could not move it from the city.

Definitely liked the area, everything well-kept and in good order, good museums, churches and park area. Actually, a good exposition for those who want to imagine life of old-time Russia, and what I was really amazed with, that all the local guides and even ladies in the ticket-offices are absolutely fanatic to tell you about the monuments, history, etc. In... Veliki Novgorod is a modern clean, green town with good facilities. The St Sophia Cathedral with its famous bell tower and the bronze bell Millennium structure with sculptures of great Russians such as Peter the Great, Tschaikovsky, Dostoevsky and others are mind-boggling. In this enclave one can also see the Chamber of Facets, a Gothic church built in the sixteenth century,... More

Not comparable with its Moscow counterpart, it nevertheless offers a different but worthwhile experience. It, too, is built close to a river (Volkhov), and a section of the still-intact walls (though much repaired over the 8 centuries-plus since their initial construction) is adjacent to a sandy beach. 9 of its 12 towers still stand, and the 41 meter-high Kukui Tower... Loved our day at the Kremlin. Founded in the 10th century, Novgorod is very rich in history and is one of the oldest cities of modern Russia. The Kremlin contains the oldest palace in Russia (Chamber of the Facets). We particularly enjoyed visiting the open air museum of wooden architecture and St. Sophia Cathedral (don't miss the frescoes and the... More

This is a small Kremlin, compared with others. It is free to enter, very quite and clean. There is a lot to see and walk around. The people who work there are very nice and helpful.

It's worth coming out to VN for a day trip from St Petersburg or Moscow, or as a stop over between the two cities just to see the Kremlin, which is the oldest in Russia. It's a short 30 minute walk from the station - just head straight over the road from the station and keep going, past the square... More
