I've taken the Sapsan train several times to travel to Saint Petersburg from Moscow. Its speed is around 220 km per hour and ithe trip lasts 4-4,5 hours. There are 3 classes in the train: economy, business and first. I've travelled business and first class. Business is not so impressive. The seats are just a little bigger and more comfortable... I rode on this train in June 2007; we left Moscow at 6 p.m. and arrived in St. Petersburg about midnight. It was my first trip traveling 220 mph. The train made two stops only during the trip. Each seat had a box lunch on it, with a roll, some great garlicky sausage and some condiments. I still have the... More

I booked my ticket in English directly on the Russian railways website rzd.ru. Easy to follow the steps, the ticket was printed at home. Some people have mentioned problems paying online with a foreign credit card, but there were no problems. At the station in Moscow you have your bags screened and pass a metal detector at the entrance and... More

The train was very good and travelled at about 200- 220 kph with a journey time of 4 hours between Moscow and St Petersburg. The scenery was fairly monotonous with fir trees and birch trees interspersed with rivers swamps and small settlements. We stopped at two stations en route for two minutes each. It was a very smooth ride and... More

Taking the Sapsan really is an experience. Just like taking the Bullet Train in Tokyo. It is a million times better than standard trains in Russia. Comfort, leg room, service. It was a wonderful journey.

The Sapsan is the fastest way you can get from Moscow to St Petersburg. Its a little more expensive compared to the regular trains but completely worth it.
