Impressive but other jebel routes are more so!

Oman is full of spectacular scenery and jebel Akhdar contains some of it. However, after visiting Jebel Shams, and taking the outstanding mountain route through Wadi ban Auf, I found jebel Akdar a bit disappointing. Perhaps its the fact there is an excellent paved road all the way, and the fact that the villages are therefore more accessible and developed?... More

The coolest place in Oman and the highest point also. You need a 4 wheel drive to go to the top. Once you reach the top you dont even fell that you are in muscat as the temperature is too low. In winter it goes below to the freezing point also

Contrary to mixed reviews we read about theis place regarding safety, i drove up in my own 4X4 and found it very safe. The road itself is in excellent condition and many safety barriers in place to prevent any accident. Jebel shams is the one i would not recommend. You need to get there early so that you can see... Well worth a visit , once at the top the views are simply stunning. Roads are safe and well maintained. You will need a 4x4 to be allowed access onto the road up the mountain. A police check at the base of the plateau ensures all vehicles are suitable for the steep drive. Combine your trip with an early start... More

Before visiting Oman I spent a lot of time reading reviews, blogs and destination guides but still couldn't work out the difference between these three places. This review is to help anyone like me who is struggling to piece it all together. Jebel Akhdar: Distance: Only about 40km from Nizwa but steep, windy roads. Takes about 30 mins to get... More

We took the route up to Jebel Akhdar en route to Nizwa. It's a fun drive, despite the very dramatic warnings the road is absolutely fine, almost brand new with plenty of passing points and lay-bys. You need to register at a police checkpoint before the mountain approach, but all they do is ask for your details. Very polite and... More

The trip needs 4*4 car and police will not premit you to go to Jabal without it. You will drive 2 hours at least from Muscat . The place weather is good and the only thing is that the hotel facilities and relaxing

Great place to visit. You need a 4x4 to reach the top. Roads are safe. Small parks with simple cafeteria available on the top. There is a fantastic viewpoint, rose garden and wadi bani habeeb. It's less than 2 hours from the souk. We left nizwa at 8am with packed breakfast. Spent some time visiting the places and we're back... More

The best time to visit this place is during the peak summer months when temperatures hit 40+ degrees in the rest of the country. A police check at the bottom of the plateau ensures that only 4x4 vehicles enter the plateau. But you can easily rent one, either from Muscat or at the bottom of the plateau, at a minimal... More

Jebel Akhdar is around 2000 m above sea level and the humidity is low, making it the best place to camp in Oman in the summer. You need a 4x4 to get there as there is a police check near the bottom of the mountain. It is not difficult terrain though, we have been in much more challenging places without... More
