Would be quite spooky in the night time I would guess. Down town Georgetown but blink and you would miss it. Not very big but worth 10 minutes to wander around.

If you're interested in the history of Malaysia, especially Penang,I think you could not miss this place. It had been some kind of lost world along the road, but the souls lying there were already being a part of history of Malaysia. It's a meaningful and peaceful place.

This is one of the most atmospheric places in Georgetown, tucked away and almost unnoticeable in the middle of the tourist area. The cemetery is shaded by huge trees, the graves invaded by moss, some in a bad state of disrepair, and they tell the whole story: whole families killed by malaria, (they called it "fever"), tragic destinies, respectable and... The cemetery contains the graves of many early European settlers including the founder of George Town. Whilst the cemetery is in a state of disrepair many of the headstones are being restored and revealing the names of the early pioneers to the visitor.

Totally not spooky. You can read the history of Penang and its relation to Singapore within the British Empire in the descriptions on the headstones (read between the lines). Grave of Francis Light if located somewhere there. Sir Stamford Raffles' brother-in-law is also buried there. Nice quiet surroundings, slightly out of the way of the town but not too far... More

Old cemetery down near the water. Lots of very old graves including that of Francis Light. You can go in and walk around and look at the gravestones. Some are quite sad when you see how young the children were when they died.

Most of the cemeteries will create a horror within us, as we feel departed and alone, As such this is also a kind of cemetery but there is peace .. May all of them inside rest in peace ..!

Although we had previously lived in Penang, this was the first time we had been there. Seems to be well maintained, and map shows some of the main graves.

Ok it has a lot of old graves including the one of Francis Light but most of the names mean nothing to most of us. However a nice shady spot close to town for a walk and if you like a bit of contemplation.

I'm not a fan of cemeteries or religious monuments and such, but if you are this one is an interesting stop on a tour of George Town. Captain light and many of the early founders are buried here. The tombs and headstones are in various states of decay from constant exposure to the harsh seaside conditions of the setting, but... More
