The snow was insane! The place wasn't crowded. I lucked out. It was just perfect. Massive Backcountry.

We lucked out --the skies were a little cloudy at the bottom of the rope way, but clear at the top. The time? A weekend day at the end of August. As we were just casual hikers, we spent a happy hour walking the "Gourd Trail", which passed through alpine meadows and ponds of the area. Lovely views! The rope... More

Massive backcountry Just came back. The longest back-country routes do not open up till April 1st. 2nd day went down the Hokibatai Route, after climbing for about 1-2hrs from top of cabel car. Was a bus at 1.30pm to go back to ski resort. cost 500 yen. Recommend guide from Sukayu Onsen 4,000 for day in a group up to... More

October is the best time to visit the Hakkoda mountain range. I you are passionate about hiking, trekking and photography. You can either take the ropeway and once at the top you can take one of the several 1 hour, 2 hour hiking trails or you can take the plunge and spend a good 5 hours or so doing it... More

Hakkoda has the greatest amount of snowfall in the whole of Japan. Snow covers bridges and bus stations. Main thoroughfare opens only in April. Fantastic backcountry, accessible safely with local guides, either fr the Ski School (just next to Hakkoda Resort Hotel), ski guide club (in hotel Sansou) or private. We hiked tediously w snowshoes to be rewarded with wonderfully... More

A great trip up the mountain, with great views from the top. This area is a ski resort in the winter

We stopped off at the ropeway while traveling by bus from Lake Towada up to Aomori City. Took the cable car up to the top and then back down, basically. Because we were on a tight schedule and the buses aren't that frequent, we had to take the next cable car back after arriving at the top. But it was... More

Hakkoda is a strange mistress, both beautiful and unforgiving. The views from the ropeway in the autumn and spring are incredible, but it really excels as a ski/snowboard destination in the winter. It is unlike any resort I've ever visited. There are only 2 marked courses, denoted by orange poles stuck in the snow every 10 feet. You should be... More

We drove up from Tawada-ko, which took a bit over an hour. The drive was pretty enough, although it was overcast and a little rainy that late October day The ropeway (or, gondola) itself was built some time ago, but like all things in Japan was well maintained and spotlessly clearn. The ride takes you up to a cute little... More
