An uphill walk through the Arcade leads from the tram station to the onsen. It passes numerous tourist souvenir and craft shops. You will pass happy tourists from the onsen wandering the streets in their yukatas. A pleasant place to stroll for a while.

This area is filled with wonderful shops, some small, some large, ALL unique! Great for souvenir shopping as it's true craftsmanship of Japan, as oppose to cheap mass produced goods from neighboring countries. This is a wonderful street not to be missed! Insider Tip: Dogo Onsengai is the street leading up or the historic spa. "Gai" means street, hence the... More

It doesn't get more Japanese than this! Taking a communal bath in this spa is certainly an experience never to be forgotten. At least the genders are separated while in the actual baths, but we all lounged around together before and after bathing in our standard issue bathrobes. The atmosphere is very congenial, and you really do get good and... More

My wife made me go and I was glad I did. This is the real part of Japanese culture that Westerners should see. What an incredible experience. I had a private bath, or so I thought. I was ushered downstairs to what I thought would be a private facility. I could not read Japanese so I had to figure out... More

There are two types of tram going to Dogo Spa. One modern, the other is a vintage steam tram. The tram stop is at the terminus of the line and is by the entrance to Dogo Arcade which leads to Dogo Spa. Next to the entrance to the arcade is a footbath which is free for anyone to use. Also... More

Being a Miyazaki fan, I was very excited about visiting Dogo Onsen and I wasn't disappointed! The exterior of the building is quite amazing and it is worth the steep walk up to the Onsen car park to get a bird's eye view of it. The onsen experience itself isn't for the shy but it is quite good fun, especially... More

If you like Miyazaki's Spirited Away, you want to see this place. The bath house in the anime was inspired by this Onsen house. The building is great to look at. There is a lot of history about Dogo onsen. Famous people visited and stayed. It's a public bath house. So guests usually stay in other hotels and buy tickets... More

My one and only onsen experience in Japan so not much to compare it with. But the building is beautiful - not too sure about the communal bathing thing, but when in Japan...

We had expected more than a face cloth for use as a towel. Ladies even had to pay to use the hair dryer. The hot bath itself was bit small, but fortunately not too crowded. Overall, a very average experience, but at least we can say that we have been in very hot water at Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's... More
