One of the best castles in Japan

One of the most extensive castles in Japan. Had 49 turrets and 19 gates at one time. Much of it is reconstructed but they have done a good job of doing so. Ignoring the kitchy dressed up samurai etc in the courtyard gives a good sense of how advanced and amazing castles were in Japan 400-500 years ago. The main... More

Expansive castle with displays, explanation of building techniques and relaxing grounds. You can go through most of the castle into the high parts and view the rooms with elegant furnishings.

We spent a lovely day at this attractive castle and its grounds. From the outside, the main tower is very impressive and photogenic. Inside it is a museum which means that the interior of the building lacks authenticity which is a shame. The Palace, nearby in the grounds, is beautiful, containing exquisite painted screens and doors and the wooden roof... More

Definitely this is one of the best castle I have ever seen in Japan. Entrance fee is cheap and no need to pay additional fee to see main tower. You can see beautiful Kumamoto city from the main tower.

It might not be the most beautiful Japanese castle but certainly the grandest I have seen. Like.. water moat.. how the rocks stacked up, from gradual to vertical. Impressive ! While the turret has nothing to see inside, it offers the best view to take a pic of the castle . Don't miss that

Kumamoto castle offers a dominating view of the city. Made it there bust at the beginning of the cherry blossom season. While not as many as in other parts of Japan the blossoms were very scenic when walking around and provide for some great photo opportunities.

The castle has been rebuilt but you can get a sense of its former grandeur and massive size. The really special thing here is the palace - the gold leaf and paintings are stunning. Inside the castle tower is all cement.

The grounds are really nice and the exterior is fabulous. We could see it from our hotel room, light by night and the two towers and a gate tower during the day. However, it is a reconstruction and a concrete castle doesn't compare with a real, wood castle. I know that there are only 12 left and that they have... More

I have been here last two years(July 2013).This is my second times,I want to see The black castle (Kumamoto castle one of the three premier castle in Japan) with Sakura. That are not disappointed me. Castle with cherry blossom are very beautiful view.Only a few weeks you can see cherry blossom duration is about 20 March to 3 Apr.
