Ended up with an extra day on a business trip. Stopped by the Kumamoto castle after stopping by the old samurai house. The castle was interesting as it was the first castle that I've visited in Japan. The grounds and the corner turret building was interesting. Had to take my shoes off to go into this building, but it added... More

I have been to countless castles in Japan and this castle is one of the nicer rebuilt ones. The museum on the inside is a little bit lacking, honestly, but the grounds and shops inside are nice and you don't have to worry about falling up scary ladders like in old castles. I would recommend for trips with friends or... More

Pros: - big beautiful traditional Japanese castle - easy to get to via public transportation - interesting performance in front of castle Cons: - a lot of exhibits lack English explanation. Some has a short description/one line sentence description, some has no English at all - if you have been to other Japanese castle this is just the usual drill,... More

When in Japan, you must visit the castles. Pros: - Very nice castle - The surroundings is peaceful and the smaller towers/turrets are nice too - There was a ninja/samurai show when I visited (i didn't understand it because it was in Japanese, but the show was entertaining) - Easily spend 3 hrs going around the Kumamoto Castle area. -... A must visit place of interest in Kumamoto. Through renovation, the castle exterior is able to maintain its grandness. Inside the castle, it lost its authenticity. Museum like displays tells you the history on every floor. Still, it is a must visit place. Get a day pass tram for a discount in the entrance fee.

A must see if you're in the area. The castle and the surrounding area are very well maintained and a beautiful example of ancient Japanese architecture.

If you're in Kumamoto for a day, do yourself a favour and visit the castle. You won't regret it! Less touristy than the other castles and has splendid architecture with a rich history!

No doubting this is a huge castle steeped in history, but it doesn't come close to those in Kyoto Still definitely worth a visit.

The rebuilt Kumamoto castle is a towering feature of the city of Kumamoto. It is consistently rated in the top three castles of japan and was one of the main reasons this destination was on our list. It is accessible by tram car for a fare of 150 yen flat rate. The grounds are impressive with the highlight being the... More

We took the 9:09 am Sakura Shinkansen from Hakata and arrived at Kumamoto Station 40 minutes later. From there, we took the tram to Kumamoto Castle. Since it was New Year's Day, there were no entrance fees for Kumamoto Castle and Hoshino Mansion. There were many tourists (both local and foreign tourists, mostly from China and Korea) but not so...
