A must stop in Kagoshima. A short show explains history of the restoration. You can picture the days when Japan was struggling to move forward to the modern times. Story of the leaders was quite impressive.

Hadn't realised what a significant role this city and Kyusyu had played in 'recent' Japanese history- the conflict and determination of the scholars of Kagoshima. Their story is remarkable, they must have been extremely clever, intelligent and adaptable young men. We came to Kagoshima because of its geography and came away impressed also by its history. Excellent museum and interesting... More

Incredibly interesting, not just a museum, they have a show that details the history of the samurai and their demise, it was fascinating, such a proud history and culture, you cant help but admire the Japanese samurai

I couldnt stay for 'show' unfortunately so I found this place bit... boring? Maybe Im just too young to understand all of this things tho. I had an audio set in english which was a bit helpful but it really sad that there were not many things in english tho, just the numbers. Its in good location, but I didnt... More

If you're interested in Japanese history it's a very interesting museum (it has English audio headsets). It's a short walk from the Kagoshima station and a worthwhile visit.

The museum tells you a lot on the importance of Kyushu during the Meiji restoration. The earphones with English Readings are very good.

On the way to the musueum, there was a historical walk which introduced us to the main characters of Sastuma history. The historical walk served as a brief introduction to the museum. This museum itself is very well presented. Most of the materials are presented in Japanese, but request for an English audio guide from the counter to make the... More

First of all, adult entry fee is 300 yen and if you have the Kagoshima City "Cute" day pass for public transit, you will get a rebate on your entry fee. I recommend this museum for any history lover. It greatly details the events leading to the Meiji Restoration. The museum not only chronicles the important people, but also the... More

This is an interesting museum, with an animatronics show in the lower level which describes some of the politics around Meiji restroration. My only complaint about this would be the standard one: it would really help foreign visitors to have more information in English.

If you're interested in Shimazu and Satsuma history, it's a must-go. Audio guide is available in English, Korean and Chinese. There are two re-enactment show that are very informative.
