There are two options on Sakurajima - the full bus tour circumnavigating the island, or the Island View tour. I suggest the Island View, unless you have lots of time and interest in volcanoes. The Island View tour takes an hour. It stops at each sight long enough to enjoy the views. You get a glimpse of the lava fields,... More

Good work bus operators, would appreciate a bit more English but what you have in the commentary is excellent[and we are in Japan] A value for money trip up to the observatory with several stopoffs at significant points.

I bought the welcome cute pass for traveling around Kagoshima and the island view bus was included which made it's really worthy. One round took about 1.5 hrs. You could hop on -hop off anywhere you want and spend time at your favorite spot as long as you want unless you took the last bus. -*- It's the best way... More

If you are in a rush, this bus tour will work. Loops between a few observatory points near the port and comes back within an hour. You have like 5 to 10 minutes at each observatory point. Because I wasn't in a rush, I felt that this tour was too rushed. We literally ran out to take photos and then... More

Bus every hour with voice recording in Engish to tell you when and where the bus stops. You can get on and off when you like and it costs between £1 and £4 pounds depending how long you are on it.

Sakurajima Island View buses leave hourly from the Sakurajima ferry terminal and for a 1-1.5 hour tour of the island. It is a smaller loop than other tour groups, only travelling the ¼ of the island closest to the ferry terminal rather than around the entire thing, although it covers both observation lookouts and most of the essential stops. Although... More

My time in Kagoshima was limited, and the longer, more expensive tours of Sakurajima didn't fit my schedule. This is a small bus that makes several stops close between the harbor and the observation point at 373 meters or so. Each stop is between 5-10 minutes. Total cost of the tour is 500 yen for adults. I believe this tour... More

Well worth a climb to the top of the hill to view the volcano and then take the ferry to explore it more. Bear in mind all the vegetation is new since the last eruption and when it is smoking it might just be about to wipe out what uis there now!
