If you like lots of deer that's fine but the interesting thing are the temples. The deer will come after you if you start feeding them.

There are tamed deers everywhere. They are very friendly and can be fed. Just buy a pack of biscuits from the vendors spread across the park for 300 yen. The whole place is very beautiful and I would recommend anyone to spend a day there.

There are over 1200 deer that live in that park. They eat these little biscuits that you can get for 150 yen. These deer are very smart, they know who has food and who doesn't and will follow you everywhere for you. They are super cute, if you bow to them, they will bow back. Others will rub your legs... I quickly stopped in Nara for a couple of hours en route to Kyoto. The gardens here are beautiful and the deer are absolutely charming. I heard previously that they can sometimes be a little aggressive when you have the wafer biscuits, but I just had some young ones and their mothers following me everywhere I went. There is a... Fun experience suitable for the whole family! Just a note for people with fatigue, mobility or pregnancy - There is a lot of walking and many many many steps which were slippery at times with rocks and gravel. I would also arrive earlier in the day to beat some of the crowds as it does tend to get busy! Worth... More

I highly recommend Nara as a one day trip from Osaka or Kyoto as it is easily accessible using JR Nara Line. If you are fast traveller or you start your day very early, you might want to consider adding Uji in your day trip, as it is also served by JR Nara. Nara Park is definitely the main attraction... A varied landscape containing many artefacts on plinths and an array of temple buildings. The deer are omni present and protected as they are considered to be messengers of the deities.

Loved Nara park. So much to see. Wakakusayama Hill is a great walk (east end of Nara Park). Deer biscuits are available for 150yen & the deer absolutely adore them. A 'must' destination for any Japan trip

skipped out on all the zoos and aquariums in the Kansai region so I could visit animals in their free and natural state -- nara was a great option! just about 3-5mins away from the train station you would already start to see deers freely roaming around. they are mostly gentle and docile, except for a few who are fighting... Nara Koen was one of my favourite day trips out of Kyoto. Took the bus out to the park primarily to see the deer and Todaiji temple. The deer roam freely around and for 150¥ you can buy deer biscuits and feed them. Be mindful, they can smell them a mile off and will herd around you! Little kids can... More
