Very good place to relax. The view is good near lake. And it is only 1 hr away from Tokyo. We were there with cloud weather. Can't see Mt. Fuji. However, the cloud is very low and whole environment is very nice.

The stark contrast between Hakone and Tokyo is very remarkable. While Tokyo is packed with nightlife and busy streets Hakone on the other hand is very serene and laidback albeit full of activities to choose from. Being only 2 hrs or less from the bustling metro it is really worth the side trip , an overnight stay is a must... More

Hakone is where Tokyo goes to 'take the waters'. The train up is amazing- it literally zig-zags up the mountain, then you get a funicular, then a cable car. At the top is the area where the hot springs break the surface, with warnings not to stay too long because the gasses are poisonous. Do try the black ice cream... More

We loved Hakone but don't go for the nightlife, most places close by 8pm. We dined at a very small local Sushimi restaurant, maybe seated 10 people. Fantastic food prepared in front of you and the sake was great:-) Bring your comfy shoes, the hills are a hell of a workout.

This is one of the most beautiful areas we stopped in Japan!! Loved the entire city. Must do the rope way and the Hakone museum.

Hakone is a great place to visit. It is very set up for tourism, but there are few hidden treasures to find

Old fashioned and 'cultural' feeling about it - polite people, very traditional lifestyle, great eateries, magnificent scenery. We were there in a fairly quiet time (mid-summer) however we still thoroughly enjoyed it. Even needed a jumper from time to time, but generally tee shirt, shorts and good walking shoes sufficed. About 90mins from Tokyo on the Shinkensen (bullet train) and... More

While in Tokyo I am usually dazed by the sky rises, neons and manga the song “It’s a material world” I guess plays in the background. But once I step out of the city it’s quite the contrast- the neons change into green, the sky rises are forest clad hills. One such step out was to Hakone. Read more about... More
