Hakone is a great place to visit. It is very set up for tourism, but there are few hidden treasures to find

Old fashioned and 'cultural' feeling about it - polite people, very traditional lifestyle, great eateries, magnificent scenery. We were there in a fairly quiet time (mid-summer) however we still thoroughly enjoyed it. Even needed a jumper from time to time, but generally tee shirt, shorts and good walking shoes sufficed. About 90mins from Tokyo on the Shinkensen (bullet train) and... More

While in Tokyo I am usually dazed by the sky rises, neons and manga the song “It’s a material world” I guess plays in the background. But once I step out of the city it’s quite the contrast- the neons change into green, the sky rises are forest clad hills. One such step out was to Hakone. Read more about... More

Hakone is the perfect place to relax and unwind. I enjoyed wandering in the peaceful, beautiful surroundings of this resort town. I visited the Open Air Sculpture Park, Lake Ashi and Owakudani (literally ‘Great Boiling Valley’). With the Hakone free pass you can see and enjoy all major spots hassle free as the Japanese organization and detail. I stayed at... More

For a relax and hassle free daytrip, I suggest getting the Hakone 1 day free pass and paying extra for romance car (reserve seating and shorter travel time). Check the weather forecast and book the tickets in advance via www.odakyu.jp. We loved the express train (runs strictly on time) and the seamless transfers (ropeway, shuttle bus, pirate ship, cable car,... More

We did a 2-day trip to Hakone using the Free Pass and while I suppose it could be done in one day, I would suggest a taking a couple of days as there is lots to do. As it was, I felt we were a bit rushed and wished we had booked a later train (I would suggest waiting to... More

We went to Hakone on a daytrip from Tokyo. The region is very beatiful and the advanced transport system makes it easy to cover a lot of ground in only a day. What's more, the modes of transport ranges from a rather tacky pirateship to an amazing ropeway + an oldschool mountain train. We were lucky enough to spot Mount... More

In two-three days you should be able to do most of the things available. I strongly recommend trekking along the old Tokaido from Amazake Chaya to Moto-Hakone and going up to Owakudani. Other pleasant thing include the rope way, the Tozan railway and the Ashinoko cruise. From the top of Owakudani there are some great views down into the valley.
