Tried to drive up in March this year but had no access. Would have liked to see the view of Otaru from up the top where there is access road, much like Mt Isana in Nagasaki but the road was closed. So was the rope lift because of bad weather.

Take the bus (220 yen) from the bus terminal outside JR Otaru station heading to Mt. Tengu (天狗山). You will need to take the gondola to the mountain top (~1200 yen for a return trip). Perhaps I have seen the Hakodate night view before hence this time I don't really feel too much of a spectacular view. However during winter... More

Mt. Tengu can be easily accessed by bus (¥220 one way), followed by ropeway (¥1140). You can also get seasonal ticket if you make multiple use of the ropeway, eg. people who ski at the mountain. It's interesting to see the whole city being lit up after night fall. Do go up to the mountain before it gets dark and... More

HIGHTLIGHT OF MT. TENGU IS THE CHIPMUNKS PARK!!!! You can buy treats at the entrance of the park to feed the chipmunks, hold the treats on your hand and the chipmunks will climb onto your hands. For those going to Otaru, set this as your day trip. buy a bento box and enjoy your lunch at the top of Otaru... More

We went up there at night because we saw the brochures with pictures of the city at night. Unfortunately, the snow was falling heavily when we were in the gondola. When we were up there, there wasn't much to do except for a small ski museum and a restaurant that had nobody. We played a bit of snow for 10... More

If you have time to kill just drop by here. I visit here at end July with hot sun. A small temple Tengu & the forests trail only. There is a café for you to eat some ice-cream & light meal only.

go up before sunset, and wait! you will be greatly surprised how beautiful it will become ^_^ Mt. Tengu is much quieter and serene, compared to Mt. Hakodate, and a lot less crowded. it drizzled a little before we went up, which dampened our moods a bit. but we saw double rainbow in the end! watch the changing colours of... More

Bought the bus and rope way combined ticket from the bus terminal outside JR Otaru station. The view of the Otaru Bay was great ! Should have gone in sunset time to see the night view! The facilities up there are a bit old, I have been there more that 20 years ago an it seems that not much upgraded... More

Mt. Tengu in Otaru is part of a ski resort and our tour group took a gondola up and down. Terrific view of Otaru and surroundings. There is a chipmunk walk-in cage where the tame chipmunks will eat snacks from your hand or may even climb onto your shoulder & back. There is a tengu statue – if you rub... More

We went up the mountain top by a ropeway . There is a chipmunk park!!! They are very small, cute and nimble. They're timid, but come out of their nest and eat the sunflower seeds from our palms. So pretty. We enjoyed the grass bobsled. We can change the speed of it. So much fun! There is a small museum about... More
