Went to visit the canal 2 week before their snow festival but nothing there except some lightings along the canal a bit disappointed.

Nothing spectacular, I was wondering why the hordes of Chinese tourists were elbowing out each other to take pictures.

Is a must visit place in otaru! We went there during winter, therefore the walkway was all covered with snow, beautiful scenery. Lots of souvenir shops and restaurants beside.

Good place to take some pictures and it's on the way to the more touristy shops (glass, music box and wonderful desserts) further down the road. The winter snow and lights do make for a better view at night and there are far fewer tourist after it gets dark.

We went twice to the canal, once at night and once more the next day. While it was very pretty during the day, the lights coming on at night made the whole canal look quite magical. We came across the canel at night after dinner at the beer hall and it looked gorgeous with the snow and lights. Definitely worth a look. There are lots of restaurants nearby and its s great spot for a photo.

We took the JR to Otaru Station and walked south towards the canal. It was a nice winter walk. Good photo opportunity. There are a few restaurants nearby, several historical buildings too.
