It is just like other water view, feeling romantic when walking by the cannel. The location is quite crowded in the evening. If you want to take nice photo with less visitors, you'd better go there around 8.30am.

Knowing the structure and history of Otaru canal, canal tourism will become more wonderful. We have already strolled the right half of canal by ourselves. We were just little bit tired of walking. At that time,a rickshaw man spoke to us. We wanted to go to the Shinto shrine=Jinjya near the JR OTARU station. Because a festival was held there. So... More

Actually I think the area feels nice and tranquil. With the row of houses and nice water, blue skies over it. But too many tourists! Tour buses rolling along. Hordes of tourists taking individual or group shots, tour group large photos also taken in front of the canal. Be prepared to jostle for your space during the holiday peak seasons.... More

Nice stroll along the canal in the lazy summer afternoon. The pictures taken here turns out beautiful in the evening & night. Nothing much to do here, except to take pictures & enjoy the old warehouse buildings & view. A day trip from Sapporo is sufficient. Just a 15-20 min walk from the Otaru JR station.

I did not do much research before coming here. My verdict...great place to be for a one day trip. Took the train from Sapporo station to Otaru. First thing to do is go to the fish market. Located towards the left side of Otaru JR station. The fresh seafood is great and prices are lower compared to Hakodate. Maybe the... More

Otaru (小樽) is a small harbor city, about half an hour northwest of Sapporo by train. Its beautifully preserved canal area and interesting herring mansions make Otaru a pleasant day trip. To appreciate the Otaru Canal, we should look at the prospective of immense restoration work , to keep the same look as in ancient days. From the early days... More

It's interesting if you know it's history . There is a tea house run by a local man in his 60s and inside, There are photos of the canal when it was in use.

I have been to this Canal 2 times. It depends on the weather and time of the year, the pictures turned out would be very different. Also try to be day during the day and night! There is a very nice rotating sushi restaurant (Gantoro) at the end of Canal, beside the tourist information both. Try it out ! If... More
