I visited Otaru this afternoon, 30 June 2014 and understand why Lonely Planet had only a one line write up. I would not recommend Otaru unless you're very bored in Sapporo. Thankfully the journey by train was only 30 mins. Few tourists so its possible to chill out for a coffee. Very touristy and only shopping - available in Sapporo.... More

We took a train from Sapporo to Otaru but after the long day of fighting the strong winds and rain and cold that lashed away at us in Otaru, we realized we should have alighted at Otaru Minami station, which would have been nearer to all the gourmet shops and sightseeing spots. We didn't quite make it to a few... More

We didn't take the canal cruise but slowly strolled along it while taking pictures. The view there was really nice and there were plenty of other tourist attractions nearby too. I do feel that the view would be nicer if taken at night with all the lights though.

Not a canal by Western standards in that it is not that long, but it does serve as a good reason to take a stroll along the waterway and get a feel for old Otaru. As you get nearer to the centre of town the crowds increase as you approach the brick warehouses. These are worth a look providing you... More

Otaru's canal is pretty short and while it is great they restored it and kept it, it would be great if they continued to fix up the warehouses on the port side to give it a little more life. The photo op spot was crowded with tourists and the walk is pleasant enough, but this is one of Otaru's main... More

It's just an ordinary looking canal by the road but the view with reflections in the water makes this place unique. You will get different "feel" during different seasons. I was there during the beginning of winter with light snow around...the view was nice. Hey, beware of the slippery ground if you plan to go during winter.

I would recommend Otaru as a side-step from Sapporo, a nice afternoon away from the big city. It is a small, pleasant town with lots of small eateries, particularly sushi. The canal itself is not as atmospheric as most tourist brochures make it out to be. It's a somewhat broad canal with warehouses on each side which, in a particular... More

It's only 30 minutes from Sapporo station. We stopped at Minami Otaru and walked about 10 minutes to Otaru city hall. There are lots of shops selling local foods, cakes. We went to the crystal handmade shops, chopstick shops and glass making shops. There are lots of restaurants selling local foods. The Canal ... To be honest is not as... More

Visited in early spring. Just a canal lined by back portion of old warehouses on one side and the other by main road. Water is clean and able to see reflection of warehouses. This attraction would be more enjoyable when covered with snow as in the photographs. Can enjoy yourself on a human cart ride with a fee, one elderly... More
