After doing a lot of research before traveling to Sapporo and having a kayaking trio cancelled due to bad weather, we went to Otaru for part of day to see the canal and walk around. The canal is very short and absolutely crammed with tourists in the summer, even on a week day. The road next to it is very... More

Yes. This is not a long one... It is famous to be seen in the very romantic Japanese movie... The canal which I saw in the Bern was more memorable with city's old buildings. However, this canal gave me a very Japanese tranquil feeling and comfort. Also, very memorable one.

An interesting, romantic, picturesque preservation of old warehouses and other buildings along a canal used previously by boats unloading wares from bigger ships anchored further out. Now the buildings are mostly restaurants or souvenirs shops. The canal is light with gas lanterns patterned after old fashioned street lamps called GASU-TOU(ガス灯).

This is not a long canal but it is beautiful. If you pace your day appropriately, then you can see both the canal during the day and night. I went to Otaru in the morning, immediately headed down to the canal. It was a cloudy day so I din get to see the shadow of blue sky but it has... More

Visited on a super hot day. Although the view of the canal is nice but I can imagine it would be lovely on a cooler day. I enjoyed walking along the shopping streets further down the canal. Also visited the music factory which was really nice as I had never seen so many musical boxes under one roof. Must be... More

The canal is very picturesque and you can imagine what it just have been like to load and unload cargo back in the heyday. Honestly though it's really just a short stretch. Nothing too expansive.

Kind of romantic sence , really want to go back again with my bf. Don't forget to bring your tripod for taking photo at night.

I visited Otaru this afternoon, 30 June 2014 and understand why Lonely Planet had only a one line write up. I would not recommend Otaru unless you're very bored in Sapporo. Thankfully the journey by train was only 30 mins. Few tourists so its possible to chill out for a coffee. Very touristy and only shopping - available in Sapporo.... More

We took a train from Sapporo to Otaru but after the long day of fighting the strong winds and rain and cold that lashed away at us in Otaru, we realized we should have alighted at Otaru Minami station, which would have been nearer to all the gourmet shops and sightseeing spots. We didn't quite make it to a few... More
