We took JR rail from Sapporo to Otaru. As it was snowing rather heavily, we walked about 30 minutes before we finally reached the canal. The scenery was really beautiful. We made snow ball walking slowing along the canal and enjoying the nice view.

We walked up and down this area, expecting cafés and views. The canal itself is very pretty but full of tourists!! The adjacent streets were interesting but the whole area is very touristy and very expensive. We paid ¥850 for a plain coffee.

Frankly it's a nice photograph spot but nothing much beyond that. It's located next to a fairly busy road to Sapporo and there aren't too many benches to even sit and enjoy the sight. It was however beautiful during sunrise. For better sunrise Pictures walk towards the north end of the canal closer to the hotel nord otaru.

Frankly, there isn't much going on apart from tourists taking pictures around the canal area. I guess it is more meaningful to people who have watched the romantic Japanese Movie that made this canal famous.

There are street vendors along the canal selling arts and crafts. Quaint area with lots of shops in the area. Easy access from the train station. We visited as part of a tour.

Went during the dead of cold Hokkaido winter afternoon. Frankly, the place just look like a huge drain during the day time. However when I saw pictures taken by others, the place itself looks 100 times better at night. However, the shops that sells local fare opens till around 1900hrs or thereabout as per all shops in Hokkaido. Sometimes earlier.... More

U can just walk 10 minutes from otaru train station. Beautiful snow along the canal and some trees are covered by snow. It is really beautiful to walk along the canal.

iI understand that Otaru canal will be nice in winter as it is covered up with snows. Unfortunately I visited there and the place has not snowing yet. I spent in Otaru only about 5 hours which I think it is not enough. There are many shops but we didnt have much time to visit every individual shop. I visited... More

The canal is especially lovely with snow. The ground can be very slippery, we saw few people fall down. Best to go on a weekday when the crowd is not there. Lots of nice spots for photos.
