It was perfect for photo taking but it gets crowded both with locals and tourists! So don't expect to have a "people-less" shot, and when the opportunity arises be quick to snap your photos before others' cross right in your path.

We took the JR limited express from Sapporo station. We visited the shops, restaurants and places of interest in Otaru. Then by the time we reach the canal, it was already dark. However, there were already a lot of people crowding along the banks of the canal. People were also seen taking a canal ride. The lighting at the place... More

Very pretty canal, we enjoyed the stroll and looked at paintings & wares that vendors set up along the way. I loved the paintings especially of the Canal in snow - I hope to return some day and see this attraction at the time of year it is famous for.

Otaru has something to offer that many other towns in Hokkaido seem to lack. We walked around the area several times during our stay and were impressed with both the historical areas as well as the range or restaurants, shops selling local goods and many many glass shops. While English signage is limited ( except some of the historical houses/shops)... More

This was a quick get away from Sapporo, and I enjoyed the serene stroll down the canal. Wish I had more time to sit in at one of the cafes.

The weather is just so she some to take a slow walk along Otaru canal. Do check out the squid ink and melon ice cream after your walk. It is just located in a small alley next to the hotel vibrant. I also like a thoughtful touch of having good a drinking fountain next to the information centre.

I loved this place, how much I missed it since my last trip here. It is a serene but interesting walk along the canal. The houses are kept with vines growing on their walls ,giving it a ' Renaissance ' feel. Along the walk, there are plenty of eateries- grilled seafood especially the yummy scallop, ice creams, coffees , cakes... More

Well, good food and drinks in this place, and a stroll away from the old town. I already miss it. Be sure to buy the hokkaido chocolate milk and check out the musical box place.

This is where you can almost find the best collection of Sapporo in one area: 7 layers ice cream, Hokkaido Milk, Grilled Sea Food (should not missed the Alaskan Crabs), Hokkaido Mellon and of course the souvenirs.
