One of those 'like a painting on a canvas' spot in Otaru. The rustic buildings on the backdrop, the gravelled and pebbled paths with traditional styled lamp posts make this place a romantic spot. The seagulls, the flowers and the weather bring together a romantic mood all along. May not need much time to visit this place. Located about 600... More

Otaru Canal is so famous, and many travelers take photos near the canal. The canal is small than I expected. Even though I visited it in daytime, I enjoyed the scene. However, I think the night view might be much better. There are a lot of restaurants near the canal, and so having meals nearby may be a good choice... More

not sure where the tourist boat rides actually go since the canal is only a couple of 100 m long without any outlet (in earlier times the canal was open to the harbour). tourists are mainly older Japanese and Chinese.

Buy JR one day pass for ¥1,700 from Sapporo station to Otaru station. Along the way by train will see the view of seashore. Just walking from Otaru station to Otaru Canal. Along the side walk a lot of food stall such as takoyaki etc. And The Otaru Bank Museum & Post Office. Near the Otaru Canal there are a... More

A must see in Otaru. But not somewhere you will need to spend a lot of time at. Take photos once during daytime and then at nighttime.

Just 40 minutes from Sapporo JR train to Otaru, at 30 first minutes after Sapporo along the way, you can find sea shore. Otaru is little city with the canal (don't imagine like Venezia, it's very different) but romantic enough if you travel with ur mate.

This place is worth only 5 minutes for that obligatory photo and best taken only at one spot outside the tourist information. I suppose Otaru used to be a romantic spot long ago before tourists knew about it. But sadly, even the more charming shopping street was overrun by tourists, all rushing to eat the famous cream puff or sample... More
