I visited because of the Winter Light festival, a lot of snow made crafts and art along the pathway. With the candle, I believe you will find it amazing and romantic. the area is really crowded. but you do can walk there slowly and enjoy the moment there. it's different from the Sapporo Winter festival since most of the Craft... We read it was really nice and romantic spot but it wasn't impressive at all :( still is nice to look at the lights next to the canal so if you have time and are around the town you can go and take a look but wouldn't make the trip just to see this. Better go to the music box... More

Visited during winter light festival. There were hundreds of snow candles and snow crafts. That was something special you can't easilly experience at Sapporo winter festival. You'd better spend enough time to enjoy this slowly.

Otaru canal is nothing like the canal in Venice but it has its own charm and character. It's an easy stroll along the canal but can be crowded with tourists. The colour of the river and buildings change according to the brightness of the day. I took the pictures of the canal, when it was cloudy and when the sun... More

We visited during the snow path light festival. Really beautiful view, during day or night. It just get a bit too crowded for my liking. But the view is really breath taking.

went there for snow light-up, great view to take photo. but don't be tricked by someone saying that it is romantic. well, it can be romantic if there would never had been so crowded like we'd been. anyway, highly recommend to go and take a little walk with little pushed by crowd.

It's scenic and the pictures of the canal come out really well, but ultimately it's just a canal that has too many tourists.

We are here by chance as part of the sapporo snow festival package deal. While I wouldn't recommend spending all this time and money JUST for the Otaru canal and surrounding illumination, as one of the stops / attractions in a package, Otaru and the canal illumination and cute, romantic and a feel good place to visit. The establishments around... More

Its beautiful during snowing season and cannot be missed if you come visit Otaru. Loaded with tourists and everything around there were overpriced.

The canal looks especially beautiful with all the snow. The warehouse along the canal gives the canal a historic look. Love the night scene of the canal, different colours lightings make the canal looks so romantic.
