The canal and promenade would have been a lovely place to stroll along, with good company and in good weather. Unfortunately our stop there was short as we were running out of time. However we managed to take a few photos and buy a postcard!

A must visit place in Hokkaido. Very tourist friendly small town full of historical buildings. Don't need to buy the one day pass Otaru bus ticket if only plan to visit otaru canal, it only takes 5 to 10 min walk from JR station

we walked a lot from the station just to see this canal, and it turned out to be quite disappointed when we were there. It was cold and snowy, shops all closed around 6 pm. If you go there next time, better to pick a nice day!

We did the short boat cruise as well as walking around the area. On the cruise there was commentary in Japanese but we had a leaflet which explained the history of the various warehouses and other buildings. That was fairly essential as otherwise we wouldn't have known what we were looking at. The town have made the canal into an... More

If you've never been to Venice or Amsterdam you can be excited about this attraction. I gave 3 stars not one because this in the main attraction in Otaru. Better go to canal and look for one of many excellent seefood restaurants around. Fresh and good quality. Very recommended.
