The canal area has restaurants, tours, loads of shopping and food - it's ideal for whiling away time doing nothing, quite enjoyably.

Especially the glass product shop and Cheese Cake and a lot of a soft ice scream shop available to try. It also a music box shop where... More

The canal goes through the centre of the old town. There are lots of cute shops to explore and the locals are all friendly. On a nice day you can wonder for ages.

in short, think if you ain't here during their snow festival, this canal is pretty much just a big drain.... still can't quite understand all the hype.... (more details) : otaru is utterly overrun with big tour groups.... the canal, the music box museum, the famous cream puff/soft ice cream/layered cake stores, everything.... and otaru is waaay more developed than... small and cute canal. Nearby there are warehouses where you can find local restaurants. You can feel the history which Otaru used to be prosperous in late century... I liked the area cos I could feel the history...
