This is something I've wanted to see for a while. As other posters will have explained, it is a tradition that goes back to the Edo period. All of the details are explained on their English website ( http://www.gifucvb.or.jp/en/01_sightseeing/01_01.html). Tickets: Our tickets were 3400 yen each. Although you can't book online via the English website, if you or someone you... More

Cormorant fishing has taken place on the Nagara river for more than a thousand years, and still takes place every night in the season (mid May to mid October). You can reserve a place from the tourist office at the JR station, or by the river at the Cormorant Fishing Viewing Boat Office. It costs around 3100Y on a weekday,... More

Overall it was a great evening but we came away feeling that it was more of a carefully orchestrated show than actual genuine cormorant fishing. We went on the 7.15pm departure, easily parking our car for free in the car park about 5 minutes down the road. Being Western we were concerned that we would have to sit on cushions... More

This experience was as others described it. It was interesting but maybe it wasn't worth a special stop in Gifu. Most importantly, there are 3 different price structures. We paid the most, but I would recommend paying the lowest rate. The cormorant viewing is identical. By paying more, you spend longer in the viewing boat to have your dinner.

This was a great, romantic experience. We loved the atmosphere on the boats, and the customer service was fantastic. We had our hotel call ahead to make reservations. Upon stepping off the bus, we must have looked lost, because a guide called me by name to direct us. (As the only non-Japanese, we were pretty recognizable.) We were escorted to... More

Currently there are six master fisherman and each ride their own boat with their own small team. Each fisherman controls 10-15 cormorants using some sort of rope tied to their neck for control and also prevent them from swallowing the fish they catch. The best way to watch it is with a boat that go along the river with the... More

We lived in Tokyo last year and tried to take our kids (ages 8 and 14) to various places around Japan. Last spring we took them to Gifu for the annual cormorant fishing. The cormorant fishing itself is fascinating to watch. The fishermen have a "basket" of fire hanging off the front of their boats to attract the fish and... More
