Type: Specialty Shops, Shopping & Fashion
Owner description: Reaching Out is a social enterprise, training and employing persons with disabilities. Our artisans create beautiful gifts of high quality from tea ware patterned after that used by the Imperial family in Hue to elegant table ware and bedspreads of colourful silks. Our silver jewellery is designed in-house by our staff and made right on the premises. Customers are invited to visit the workshop which is right behind the retail store to watch how their purchases have been made. Our staff are willing to answer your questions and of course can tell you the details of the processes by which your gifts are crafted. They will also proudly show you to our Tea House, where you can experience a cup of coffee or tea, served in the traditional Vietnamese manner by our speech and hearing impaired staff.

This workshop trains handicapped people in many different fields in crafts and they produce first class products. We brought back home some hand woven pillow cases, ceramics and jewelry. The building itself is worth seeing too.

To get away from it, without actually going too far, head to Reaching Out for delicious herbal tea or local coffee. Oh and don't leave without trying some of their delicious treats! The only downside, some people don't realise that it's supposed to be quiet. It's a way for us all to have an escape from all the noise around.... More

Thank you for your review and your sensitivity to our suggested silence in the Reaching Out Tea House. We have designed the environment and the menu with great care so that our staff can integrate with their hearing customers and those customers can get a brief sense of what our servers' silent world is like. A local fair trade business in the old quarter of Hoi An, Reaching Out employs physically impaired men and women to produce beautifully crafted jewellery, clothing and homewares that are amongst the best you will find anywhere in Vietnam. You can see them crafting the items in a workshop out the back of the shop. There's also a tea shop... More

An amazing centre. Workshop tour to see the craftsmen and women at work was amazing - they have some excellent equipment but so much is done by hand. To then see and buy their work in the shop knowing all proceeds go straight to them and those less able.

So glad that you took the opportunity to tour the Reaching Out Handicraft's workshop to connect with the artisans who make all of our products and who are justifiably proud of their work. We also encourage the creation of new designs and when these new designs become best sellers we really celebrate! Thank you for encouraging other travellers to experience... More

The handicrafts shop was delightful. Lovely quality items. Husband purchased my Xmas present there (secretly)- silver and jade bracelet. The staff were kind when I needed to use their bathroom facilities but I really wish I'd found somewhere else instead, as they were extremely basic!

Thank you for your review and we are so glad that you were given a gift made by one of our skilled craftsman. Sorry about the bath room facilities, which are of necessity sparse. Due to the varying disabilities of our staff we keep the facility basic to accommodate wheel chairs, crutches etc. Next time we will show you to... More

After visiting Reaching Out and buying several items .. jewellery and some items for our house, we were touched by this shop. We dropped them a tip for them to share, and would highly recommend supporting this organisation. If i could do more by helping out I would love too, from abroad. By making purchases in our shop you are, as we say, buying "gifts that give twice". We mean that while you have given gifts to friends, family or yourself, you have also given a gift to the disabled staff of Reaching Out. The sales of the products that they have made with love, allow them to live independently and integrate... More

When you purchase for a good cause, it is an amazing feeling. Here, you feel that you are giving back and you can find out directly where the money is going. I really support causes like this, and the items for sale are very nice. I purchased a beautiful silk sleeping bag made by a hearing impaired Vietnamese woman.

My wife and I visited this shop following the recommendation in the Lonely Planet guide. It is a 'disabled' artisans shop. All the artefacts were wonderful and my wife bought a beautifully made, cotton kimono. I recommend this shop to all.

Reaching Out genuinely supports disadvantaged people and stocks beautiful craft items which are different from all the other stores in Vietnam. The artisan jewelry is superb and unique ceramics displayed are functional and beautiful. I admired some cushion covers and table ware on display and was told I could choose my own fabric from a vast array of luscious silks... More
