Description: The Lifestart Foundation is a grassroots, not-for-profit charity that...
The Lifestart Foundation is a grassroots, not-for-profit charity that helps disadvantaged Vietnamese people and their families to become self-sufficient. Founded in 2000 by Australian Karen Leonard and supported by a team of dedicated volunteers, the Foundation applies a holistic approach to helping those in need through proven working programs and initiatives which are designed to effect a generational change. Join us for a special half-day experience to learn more about the Lifestart Foundation and to enjoy our traditional art classes! There are many tours in Hoi An, but what makes us different is that we are a not for profit charity. Our tours give visitors the opportunity to meet local people from disadvantaged situations, many of whom have complex disabilities, and to engage in a respectful and considerate manner. You will receive a unique insight into their needs and learn how you can make a difference. Your half day includes participation in both classes, a brief video about our workshop and an opportunity for one-on-one dialogue with our members. Traditional Painting Class Have lots of fun in our traditional painting classes offered by our Lifestart Foundation recipient and local artist, Sinh Trong. Take your own handmade card home as a souvenir for friends and family! Lantern Making Class Learn how to make your own miniature Hoi An lantern taught by our workshop staff. Take your unique lantern home as a memory of your time spent at the Lifestart Foundation. Free Daily Vietnamese Language Class Feel less like a tourist, and more like a local! Every Morning & Afternoon FREE & FUN 1/2 Hour Lesson! Cultural Dos and Don'ts Shopping/Bargaining Local Cuisine Useful Tips

The gift shop and workshop sells unique hand crafted products made by disabled workshop members that make perfect gifts for special occasions. While in Hoi An I wanted to learn something about the real culture of Hoi An, and hat could be more symbolic of Hoi than the beautiful silk lanterns! Lifestart Foundation has classes for travellers to make a silk lantern and hear about a bit of the local culture at the same time which was great. I also enjoyed the... More

I have no artistic ability, but I managed through the workshop to produce a card which looked reasonable - and when I showed it a friend they wondered where I bought it. Great tuition explaining how to move the brush and apply pressure. And then another greta workshop making lanterns. Hoi An is a lovely place, but the hustle and... More

Hoi An can be a bit overwhelming in terms of the tourism trade, this is an oasis. Aside from having a great cause, which it does, and great merchandise, which it also has, Lifestart Foundation offers classes which are extremely fun and actually allow for more of a cultural understanding than just picking something off a shelf. We took the... More

I just returned from taking a group of 17 students to Cambodia and Vietnam, and we had the honor of taking art workshops at Lifestart, hearing about its history from the founder, and then meeting several of its incredible craftspeople. Anyone visiting Hoi An should make a special stop at Lifestart. I'll be shopping on the website from now on.

Spent the morning on this excursion while staying in Hoi An. It was a lovely relaxing morning, learning to paint and make lanterns in a traditional Vietnamese style. It looked like groups of 6-8 could be accommodated but it was just the two of us. They provided some information on the work of the foundation and we met some of... More

Went with a group of friends to take a lantern making class. The staff was so friendly and spoke English very well. Got to make my own personal lantern and bought some great handmade crafts to give as awesome souvenirs. Highly recommend this organization!

We did the lantern making workshop and were really happy with choosing Lifestart Foundation. The instructions were given in perfect English which makes it so much easier when you have no idea what you’re doing. The instructor was very helpful and the organization does great things. If you don’t want to make a lantern, just stop by the shop for... More
