The Lifestart Foundation is a grassroots, not-for-profit charity that helps disadvantaged Vietnamese people and their families to become self-sufficient. Founded in 2000 by Australian Karen Leonard and supported by a team of dedicated volunteers, the Foundation applies a holistic approach to helping those in need through proven working programs and initiatives which are designed to effect a generational change. Join us for a special half-day experience to learn more about the Lifestart Foundation and to enjoy our traditional art classes! There are many tours in Hoi An, but what makes us different is that we are a not for profit charity. Our tours give visitors the opportunity to meet local people from disadvantaged situations, many of whom have complex disabilities, and to engage in a respectful and considerate manner. You will receive a unique insight into their needs and learn how you can make a difference. Your half day includes participation in both classes, a brief video about our workshop and an opportunity for one-on-one dialogue with our members. Traditional Painting Class Have lots of fun in our traditional painting classes offered by our Lifestart Foundation recipient and local artist, Sinh Trong. Take your own handmade card home as a souvenir for friends and family! Lantern Making Class Learn how to make your own miniature Hoi An lantern taught by our workshop staff. Take your unique lantern home as a memory of your time spent at the Lifestart Foundation. Free Daily Vietnamese Language Class Feel less like a tourist, and more like a local! Every Morning & Afternoon FREE & FUN 1/2 Hour Lesson! Cultural Dos and Don'ts Shopping/Bargaining Local Cuisine Useful Tips

I came initially for the free Vietnamese language class that they offer, but I was so won over by the organization that I just had to stay and buy some of their products. Everything about this group just gives me a good feeling: They're friendly and helpful, charitable, as well as well organized and professional. They provide valuable suggestions about... More

I visited the little shop of the Lifestart Foundation and was impressed what I saw. They provide opportunities for disabled people to train and work at the workshop, creating a range of toys, lanterns and other items. When I came to the shop one of their staff explained what the foundation was doing, and I was introduced to three lovely... More

We went to life start foundation after getting a tip from a friend. We got there to late though but the staff went out of their way and arranged a lantern making class just for us. We had a good class even though you can buy the same kind of lantern for only 1/10 of the price. It was fun... More

We did the drawing and lantern class and loved both. The instructors are patient, fun and chatty. Interesting to talk to but also interested in their students. A great way to spend a morning!

We loved our time in Hoi An and wanted to support a charity that would benefit locals in need. Lifestart supports women, that have suffered tremendous hardship, by helping them develop their skills and in turn make a living. The latern making and painting workshops were fun and it was great to meet some of the women that the program... More

While in Hoi An I wanted to learn something about the real culture of Hoi An, and hat could be more symbolic of Hoi than the beautiful silk lanterns! Lifestart Foundation has classes for travellers to make a silk lantern and hear about a bit of the local culture at the same time which was great. I also enjoyed the... More

I have no artistic ability, but I managed through the workshop to produce a card which looked reasonable - and when I showed it a friend they wondered where I bought it. Great tuition explaining how to move the brush and apply pressure. And then another greta workshop making lanterns. Hoi An is a lovely place, but the hustle and... More

Hoi An can be a bit overwhelming in terms of the tourism trade, this is an oasis. Aside from having a great cause, which it does, and great merchandise, which it also has, Lifestart Foundation offers classes which are extremely fun and actually allow for more of a cultural understanding than just picking something off a shelf. We took the... More

I just returned from taking a group of 17 students to Cambodia and Vietnam, and we had the honor of taking art workshops at Lifestart, hearing about its history from the founder, and then meeting several of its incredible craftspeople. Anyone visiting Hoi An should make a special stop at Lifestart. I'll be shopping on the website from now on.
