My husband, daughter and I visited here on a day trip from Buenos Aires. The weather when we departed the city was foggy and rainy, by the time we arrived in this magical place it was sunny and bright. This town is beautiful. It is a blast from the past. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys history.

It is a streets that ends on the river. It was supposed to be named under the prostitutes houses there, but there is another story for the name. The sighs that those condemned to death gave when were attached only with their head out waiting for the tide to fully covered them

This picturesque little street is the first thing you come to after entering Colonia's historic centre. It leads from the sleepy Plaza Mayor downhill towards the sea at Bastion de San Miguel. The cobbled street, colourful buildings and beautiful flowers are pure postcard material. It dates back to the arrival of the Portuguese in 1680.

The dozens of photos I took of this street (and the houses) are so typical of the beauty of Colonia. It is truly like walking back in time.

What a sweet "callecita" It makes you happy walking around this part of charming Colonia and if you stop for a minute and pretend you are back in 1680, do it here.

This is supposed to be Uruguay's most photographed street, and there's a good reason--it IS that picturesque. Cobblestones, brightly colored buildings, and we even had some local cats posing for their close-ups. Don't try to navigate it in heels, though!

Legend has it that the sighs heard on this street emanated from either the sailors condemned to die at the next high tide, or those who had to leave port, leaving behind their bars and women of the night. In my case, the sigh was one of glorious contentment at walking down the Calle de los Suspiros with margarita in... More

La Calle de los Suspiros is a one block street located very close to El Faro (The Lighthouse) and for us was one of the highlights of our visit. My recommendation is to go early in the morning before the tourist groups arrive in the area...you will truly feel the reason this street was named La Calle de los Suspiros,... More
