If you get lost in Colonia del Sacramento, look for this. Just like it guides ships, it can guide you. It's a historic lighthouse. I paid the small admittance fee, but the top was closed at the time. I imagine there is a great view of the sea on a clear day, but the day I was there was extremely... More

As soon as all the city of Colonia de Sacramento, the beacon is beautiful, and bring you until old times lived in South América, in the time of the colonization. Situated near the right margin of Rio de La Plata, you can see Buenos Aires, 45 km long, in the other margin. There is a square where you shall observe an... More

I definitely recommend paying the very modest fee and climbing the lighthouse. We waited till about 5pm to go up, the line was much shorter than early afternoon. While it is true that it isn't all that high a lighthouse, it is a good vantage point to see the area and catch a cool breeze. It is a fairly easy... More

We took this as a shore excursion from our cruise when in Montevideo. It was a two hour drive each way and with nothing to see to speak of. Uruguay is known for its agriculture and that's what you see, fields and cows. We wanted to visit this town because it is a World Heritage Site. Colonia de Sacramento is... More

We didn't go up to the top but you can go up. I am sure the view must be great from there. There is a ruin of an old monastery in front of the lighthouse.

Colonia's lighthouse is a landmark. Although not so old as the rest of the old city in which is located, brings a colourful seaside touch to this small and beautiful city on the River Plate. We visited it and enjoyed the spot. Nice photos of the city and landscape from upstairs.

A small fee to see for miles and mies has got to be worth it. The sun shone, the blue sky devoid of clouds and I could see C de S in full bloom layed out below me and Buenos Aires in he distance. One of my favourite memories.

This little city is special for its art and architecture! You will find very old houses with lots of souvenirs. Food is expensive! But you can find some cheaper places to try "chivito" :)

Colonia is located about 2 hours from Montevideo, Uruguay. The drive is beautiful with very nice large green farms. Soy, sorghum and wheat are the main products, for expert. You will pass through little farm communities which still reflect the time of the Portuguese, Spanish and German immigrants. Driving into the city shows the earlier architecture and as you progress... More
