Second time I saw this, yet awe struck! Despite the fact that this is infront of an audience in a hall, yet teh spirituality is not lost, and it does not get dragging just the right duration.

Who hasn't heard of the whirling dervishes. Being on a tour which provided an optional tour here, I booked it early. The venu is a 12 th century caravansary, worthy of a visit in its own right. The audience was seated very close to the performance floor. After a short while, the performance began. A four piece orchestra composed of... More

There was a museum and mosque on this site that were very well preserved. We were amused by the little plastic booties we have to wear to protect the floors.

We went to see an early evening religious ceremony of these Dervishes. There was 6 of them in total and the ceremony took the form of first worshipping the fleece and then the whirling started. They appear to go into a sort of trance whilst whirling and quite honestly I don't know how they keep it up for so long.... More

Unfortunately when I visited Konya Ramadam was jn progress, you could get lunch but couldnt eat in evening until after 8.30pm when the sun went down and then it was very rushed. I expect the staff wanted to eat as they wouldnt have eaten all day. Also there was no alcohol to be had anywhere!!!

This was a highlight of our trip. To spend some time watching this ritual dancetakes you back in time and gives you a sense of the Sufi beliefs and whirling dervish ceremony / dance. I was truly amazed and would highly recommend you see it.

This ceremony is conducted weekly on a Saturday. Entry is free and the stadium is huge. Some 20 Mevlana monks took part. The ceremony does continue for a couple of hours but it is something unique and somewhat inspirational. There are similar ceremonies that can be seen in other parts of Turkey, but I believe that these are performed by... More
