Mevlana is the heart of the culture of whirling dervishes. It's not only a cultural but also a spiritual experience for the dervishes and this place is one of the few that does not make the whirling primarily a tourist attraction, but puts it into a context of religious meditation. The entrance is free, just make sure to arrive a... More

If you only see one thing in Turkey make sure it is a Whirling Dervish show. Tobe fair I was not looking forward to this but female pressure prevailed. Well, what a show. 3 musicians, 4 Dervishes and one leader. Extracts and music from the Koran and then the start of the hypnotic dancing and I mean hynotic, one of... More

We were enjoying a cultural tour organised by RSD Travel, and one of the attractions was the extraordinary athletic performance of these Whirling Dervishes. They mesmerise as they swirl around, skirts billowing, always right to left after receiving a blessing until they kneel for prayer. Magical, mystical experience.

I cannot imagine anyone going to Konya without assisting to a Whirling Dervish Ceremony. For me it was a hour of pure Spiritual ecstasy. First you are taken into a meditation with the penetrating music, then the appearance of the impressive Sheikh, the entrance of the somber Dervishes in their black shrouds soon to be transformed into white turning heads... I was surprised to know that you could attend the real dervishes for free at the cultural centre of Konya. It had easy access, enough room for everyone but not very comfortable for a long show. It has a handcraft market at the hall open during the performance. A bit boring but it's worth.
