If you are a history seeker, this is the place to be. At only 5 tl you get to visit the ruins of the old Agora. They are obviously working on improving it, but what there is so far is quite impressive.

We were on a hop on hop off bus which stopped at Agora which we had never even heard of!!! We were very pleasantly surprised, it was only 5tl to enter and we had a good wander around the site, it was well worth the visit.

AKA Izmir Roman Ruins Walked into this place thinking "Oh Ok, wow, some ruins. Goodie Goodie" Then we walked to the edge and saw all the underground excavations and water furrows and awesome pillars and roof supports. A truly unexpected surprise and really worth a visit for the small entrance fee they charge. For us, it was the highlight of... More

We visited this site on a few occasions and it was closed or we could no find anyone at the booth to pay the entry fee to so we did not enter. Finally we went again recently and there was a person there. I asked did they have the information pamphlet in English and was quite rudely told no. I... More

My friend and I visited the Seven Churches of Revelation which was located in Turkey, they call it Asia Minor in the Bible. All of the cities are inhabited by people and we visited the ancient ruins of each city. Izmir (Smyrna), Bergama (Pergamum), Alasehir (Thyaiyra),Efes (Ephesus),Eskihisar (Laodicea read as laodikya),Salihli (Sardis),and Philadelphia. We went to the historical market of... More

In the outskirts of Konak district you will find the Agora. It is definitely worth a visit (ticket 5 lira). An amazing site which still is being excavated. The basement of the structure is very well preserved and with its long galleries with vaults and arches, it gives a good impression of just how huge and impressive the Agora must... More

It has been our favorite shopping mall ever since it opened it opened its doors several years ago. Though there are a few more Malls around it, it has a stable clientele due to the fact that it has the right mix of shops to fit the taste of old and young. If in Izmir, do visit.

If we didn't go to Ephesus I would have said its something to consider, but its really not all that. Izmir doesn't have much going on regarding tourist attractions so if you have run out of things to do and want to do go see some ruins, go for it, otherwise I wouldn't put it on your top 3.

The powers that be in Izmir, a thriving metropolis, have authorized excavation of centuries' old ruins of the Agora (translated "marketplace") situated not far from the famous Kameralti Pazar (bazaar). The easy to read explanatory plaques are well-placed and you can meander through the maze of ruins and get a feel for life as it once was. Because it is... More
