The Monastir Ribat is one of a series of defensive forts built along the north African coast. It was built in 789 AD and had extra towers housing artillery added throughout mediaeval times. It is set on 3 levels around a courtyard with a prayer hall on the ground floor and an impressive watchtower. The towers were used to send... More

Nice to go somewhere that hasn't been draped in a health and safety regime that stiffles the origin of the building

If you just want to look at the outside, then that's fine but if you travel all the way to see the interior you will be disappointed as their work is not even half-done. And from the way I see how they take things slowly (I wouldn't blame them for working under that kind of weather), probably check back again... More

We are huge Monty Python fans so we needed to see where they were filming Life of Brian. We just say the outside and it was beautiful.

The fort is much smaller than I expected and didnt look as old as I thought it would, busy ring road around it and taxi rank just outside also street sellers trying to sell you their wares.

We went last July. We liked it - it photographed well outside - looks quite impressive for the period. You pay extra to take photos inside. Lots of steps to different levels. Views from the tower are great. They were very proud it was used in the film Life of Brian. It was the only thing of interest in our... More

It was Ramadan so closed during the day, open for prayers in the evening. Under construction/maintenance so not really much to look at.

There is not a lot attracion in Monastir, but this is the best. The court of the fortress looks good, but the view from the top is amazing! Highly recommended to go up.

Unfortunately the Ribat itself is currently closed for refurbishment due to (I believe) damage from natural causes. If and when (still closed on July 2014) you can enter you will see a fairly plain but good Ribat/Fort probably most famous for 'The Life of Brian' which was filmed partly inside. Great views from he ramparts (or their equivalents) From the... More
