Starting this off presented challenges, for if I were to initially have focused on the overly ostentatious display of spending that went into the new(ish) Buddha Memorial Hall at Fo Guang Shan, an outlay of cash that could/should have easily been allotted to more worthy endeavors, such as for the building of schools in impoverished lands afar or providing famine... This was an exceptional temple for Buddhists all over the world! Much of it is geared towards tourists, but at the same time, it is also a great learning and spiritual place for Buddhism.

We preferred the Fo Guang Shan Monastery, great experience there. This Buddha Memorial Centre is worth a visit if you have the time; it's newly built, and a little commercialized.

We went there from the city by taxi and the fare was about NT$700. The older part with the big Buddha and a thousand small buddhas was very tranquil and religious. There is also an exhibition hall about the history of the centre and Buddhism. The restaurant serves vegetarian food which is very delicious and cheap. However, the memorial centre part... More

I had no expectations but I was extremely impressed with this centre. I had a mentor helping me through as I think there is limited English signage but despite that I had a 100% experience. The 4D short movie, the palm reading and postcards are all technology driven but within a setting of reverence and tradition,

This is a brand new and very elegant worship place which is exactly the opposite of a few other attraction/things to do in this industrial town called Kaohsiung (like visiting night market where people are grilling live shrimps on a stick till it is dead, aren't they Buddhist?). Please refer to excellent direction from fellow TA reviewers unless you are... More

Before we visited the Memorial, we though this is just going to be like another temple like setting where you will find Buddha and a place of warship. Instead it is a very well designed Museum park that is great for families and non-Buddhists. The place is huge and full of interesting exhibits and halls. We were very lucky to... More

Directions: Take the “E-da” purple bus number 8501 from platform 5 exit 1 from Zuoying HSR station. It will bring you to the Buddha Memorial Centre (BMC) in about 40min. BMC is HUGE (and new, opened in Dec 2011). You should spent a minimum of 5 hours if you want to really cover every bit of the centre. When you... More
