The last thing you expect to see in an tropical paradise like Sri Lanka is a quaint narrow street town inside a heavily walled fort. But that is what Galle Fort Town is, with lighthouses, watchtowers and many historic churches, museums and boutique stores, galleries and restaurants. It really is worth a stay overnight in the old town, or a... More

We enjoyed walking around the fort on the ramparts and within the quiet streets. There are boutique shops for tourists but we chose to soak up the atmosphere of the history of the place instead.

We did a short tour of the fort with out guide and walked to the lighthouse and then went to Amanwella Hotel for afternoon tea, which I believe is an architectural treasure. We had small children so that stop was welcomed by them and couldn't really discover the small alleys of Galle... they looked very inviting thought and if you... More

We spent hours wandering the beautiful old streets. A must do in Sri Lanka's south - my favourite part of Sri Lanka.

The town and the ramparts are really pleasant to walk around. Walking the ramparts gives a view of the fort, a sense of history, and an ocean breeze. The old town itself is being beautifully restored and the restoration enhances the Dutch, Portuguese, British time. One gets a real sense of history here. There are good restaurants, coffee shops and... More

Liked the breezy walk and the views from the walls. Nice to see the Galle cricket ground. There was a bank with an ATM which was very handy

we visited Galle towards the end of the season so far fewer tourists than mid season. Having said that the Fort area is an oasis of peace compared to the wonderful hussel and bussel of Galle town proper. Lots to see and do as you amble through the colonial back streets, local craftsmen making artifacts and polishing precious and semi... More

This was extremely rewarding, we almost didn't stop in Galle, but the walk around the old town is pleasant and the view and ramparts are really interesting. There were too many shops for my liking, they were selling different quality items, but I don't travel to shop (I buy online :-) Pedlars inn gelato was first class quality 250rs a... More

Great at sunset for the views; lots of restaurants and bars to choose from, and just great for a stroll around.

We had few hours to spare when we visited Hikkaduwa. So we planned to go to Galle. Beautiful town. We walked around for 4-5 hours. So you have to have right footwear if you want to enjoy the town by walk. Also, carrying an umbrella would be good if you are walking during the day.If you want to do some... More
