Delightful

Beautiful historic buildings, relatively traffic free, views of the Indian Ocean all combine to make Galle fort a relaxing and charming place to visit or stay.

Not as peaceful as others describe below as we went on a Sunday and there was tons of people. Still very interesting. You can walk along the fort walls but also explore the streets. There is actually a lot to see if you care to explore a bit. Very interesting place and worth some time.

Maybe not worth a special trip but well worth a look if you are passing by. We stopped for lunch and had an hour spare to have a walk along the fort wall and a quick look around the old town. Nice and peaceful after the mad traffic in other towns. Old colonial buildings look well kept. Not too much... More

We met up by sheer chance in Galle with four other lovely people we had made last week on a great round-the-island tour, on which we had been warned about the Tuk Tuk drivers and how we should agree a price before setting out. Nevertheless, the six of us (who until today would all consider ourselves intelligent!) decided to take... More

We visited Galle one afternoon as part of a one-day journey around Galle and the region. It is an old fort and we walked along its ramparts and through the streets for a couple of hours and had a small snack at Rocket Burger (which was great). We didn't do any shopping but had a look through some of the... More

Galle is a beautifully preserved, Portuguese, influenced, sea side town, enclosed within medieval walls of a bygone era. Many of the houses are small, quaint and set close to the road. Most are covered with brightly coloured paint or flowers, vines and/or trees growing over the front of them. Despite it's age the town looks new and modern almost European... More

This intriguing rennovated fort town with its array of jewellery shops, restaurants banyan trees and cafes represents an interesting piece of Ceylonese history. Wandering the old streets on a hot day there is a very tranquil if slightly oppressive air of stillness about it. I can recommend the creperie and the peddlers café, nice place for a quiet dinner after... More

It's a fort. Built by English, Dutch and Portuguese in different eras of colonialism in Sri Lanka. For people interested about history it's probably must-go place, otherwise it's fairly dull tourist trap. Buildings and walls are of course nice looking, but not spectacular. Would probably be more interesting with guided tour.
