Coming from a country that's awash with history and castles, walls, etc, Including a World famous castle that goes back at least a thousand years and the Roman walls of Antonine and Hadrian going back even further, oh yes it was going to take a lot to impress me here. Unfortunately I wasn't, as when I entered and saw the... More

One of the only (if not the only) walled forts still lived in, the Galle Fort is a must. Spend the day, walk the fort, and make sure you catch the sunset with the locals! I have to Sri Lanka many times and I always visit the fort every time.

The Dutch fort and fortress is a very nice place to visit. Its so different from the standard architecture that you usually see in sri lanka and its a very upperscale and European neighborhood. Very nice to see how much European from Dutch, Portuguese and brits have brought up to Ceylan back in 16 and 18th centuries. U get to... More

What people could accomplish in those times, that keeps amazing me. We heared that the Fortifications 'saved' the old town of Galle during the Tsunami, still that strong.

Within the walls there is a vast amount of Dutch architecture. The back street are beautiful and wandered around them 3 times and found some lovely shops and bars.

We wandered around the ramparts with other tourists, mostly Sri Lankans. There were families, Buddhist priests, couples, groups of tourists, children the lot! People watching at its best. The ramparts are an easy walk. Sunset was amazing although we didn't get the best by far. We sat in the Rampart Restaurant and watched the world go by, with a cool... More

The old town of Galle is a cute little quarter in the southern Sri Lanka. What was once a Dutch colonial outpost is now a thriving local community of poets, artists, gemstone dealers and boutique shop owners. There's a historic church for every religion dotted around the city, a ton of stray cats wandering about, unbelievably clean cobblestone streets, a... More
