Makes sense to walk round early morning (6.30 to 7) before it gets hot but you also see so much beyond the tourist stuff. Dozens of very smart and cheerful children going to school, people sitting waiting to see lawyers around the square, weddings starting even at that time of day and if you go through the arch near the... Watch what time you visit as we were leaving the same time the schools dismiss the children. It was utter gridlock and quite dangerous with mopeds, tuk tuks, minivans and taxis all competing for right of way. Nice walk along the walls but quite a lot of people either begging or selling trinkets.

What may have been the hottest day in history, we took the cheats way out and kept cool in the car, and drove around all the sites, stepping out to take some amazing photos of the fort & really experience what it would have been like. Coupled with the knowledge of the boxing day tsunami, its an overwhelming thought to... More

definitely a must visit!! A beautifully restored old town..unfortunately many of the buildings have been turned into expensive/trendy shops so not sure how long the old town ambiance will last.

If you love architecture the fort town is for you. Some beautiful old Dutch colonial buildings. Some have been wonderfully restored while others have been left to decay...sad. During the 2004 tsunami, those that lived in the Fort didn't even know it happened until they later went out!

It was a tough decision to visit Galle all the way from Polonnaruwa. After the long bus trip to Colombo I transfered to another bus bound to Galle. It was past midnight when I arrived Galle and looking for a decent hotel/guesthouse was a challenge. Anyhow, I ended up in a sorry looking guesthouse far from the city center. At... More

This is an eminently walkable town with the old world charm intact and well preserved. It is best to spend a day or two in the town and enjoy the place at leisure. You will be greeted by gentle people, children playing cricket in the plaza and school kids on excursion.

The walls of the fort along the ocean is an amazing place to visit anytime, but especially at sunset. Loved the mix of travellers and locals in this meeting place. We enjoyed our stay in the fort and used the days to visit nearby beaches, markets & hiking, and the afternoons to explore the fort & its shops & restaurants.... More

We spent one day in Galle walking the lovely streets and browsing the shops (expensive). As we like architecture we really enjoyed exploring the buildings, the coffee places are really cute and all in all the old town feels like a nice break from the other Sri Lankan towns which are often too busy and somewhat unclean. Our highlight was... More

Unusual to have two entries for the same place but I guess Trip Advisor has its reasons. So rather than repeat the same review, I'll just repeat my concurrence with it being the top attraction in Galle.
