...but not if you are not.
Why? because unless you're really a group-travelling pilgrims, there's nothing much to offer here. I like historical landmarks, so I took some photos here and there, had a friday prayer there, and spent the other few hours in amazement of looking at so many people (mainly from low to mid class segments), and mostly with their pilgrimage groups. Since I didn't really understand the important figures that were buried around the mosque (and to be honest, not really interested in understanding either), looking and people praying around the tombs (various tombs of various important local muslim figures) was quite new.
The narrow streets and alleyways were packed with small shops and hawkers, selling pretty much the same variety of stuffs, from Qurma, Muslim clothes, Quran books, and Middle-East perfumes.

it depends on the people around the moskee, if you may go inside or not. For women, sarong and stola is requiered. try to enter when there are few people around the doors

It is great to just walk around and experience the atmosphere. We entered from the parking lot behind the mosque and an old man offered to show us around - didn't accept any tip - and explain about Ampel. All he wanted was a photo with us.
Don't forget to bring a scarf and to have your knees covered. We were one short but they borrowed us some sarongs.
After the mosque walk through the narrow souk and you will feel like you are somewhere in Arab Emirates.

I and my family visited this mosque to visit Sunan Ampel grave. The Arabic atmosphere is so strong. Women are forbidden to enter if they don't wear hijab.
So many people pray in Sunan Ampel grave, makes it very crowd.

An interesting place, well worth a visit. The short walking road to the mosque is filled with a variety of appealing stores. Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the mosque, but a walk around the grounds is still worthwhile.

We visited this masjid with a tour guide who has lived here for 22 years. We toured markets and Arab quarter. When we got to this masjid we had to cover our heads(this was just being respectful) the masjid is beautiful and very, very important. It was very tense because everyone was staring. Our guide suggested we leave because we were getting too much attention...I was glad to leave-i was a little scared! We were very quiet and respectful, we wore clothes that covered everything, but I am not Muslim and felt like this masjid is off limits
