Beautiful, spectacular temple. Take time to wander, but I suggest going early to avoid crowds. Note you cannot take cameras into the temple, but are allowed to take pictures with a mobile phone.

This is the Hindu temple to see in South India, it's much larger and grander than any of the other temples we saw in S India. All life is there. It is great pity they don't allow cameras. The "Going to Bed" ceremony is a must see, strange and fascinating

This Temple is very interesting, very beautiful. It's worth going a few times as you never know what events might be happening in the temple. It's also worth going both day and night. An extraordinary sight.

Madurai is synonymous with its most important landmark, the world famous Meenakshi Temple. The towers of this big temple can be seen from miles around. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, the lovely consort of Lord Shiva who presides here as Lord Sundareshwarar. The original temple was built by the Kulasekhara Pandyas and was later made splendid by the... More

The riotous architecture and carvings, the insane amount of visitors and paintings and pillars and statuary. Meenakshi Temple seduced me in and planted my soul within it's living beating heart. Get a guide to take you to the Shiva ceremony in the evening, and be early, and get to the entrance of Meenakshi's temple to witness Shiva being brought to... More
