A huge temple complex, definitely worth a see when in Madurai. Gets very busy. Best to go after seven pm, that way you can stay in the Temple grounds when the idols are being put away which is good. Can't take photos except on mobile phones. Make sure you wear long trousers, including men also.

This temple is amazing, the sheer magnitude of the architecture is awe inspiring. A word of caution though, do not employ the services of the louts posing as guides. You are better off looking for authorized government guides they have id cards issued by the Indian government. The temple is beautiful, if you want to explore it fully avoid going... More

Well I wasn't here to pray but one can be here for hours exploring the vast temple, detailed sculptures, pretty paintings, and walk around in thousand pillars museum. Now I see why this is the number one attraction in Madurai... It's cheap too, foreigners only pay 50 rupees. 10/10 recommended if you're into culture, ancient ruins, that's what Madurai is... More

There is a board that says non-hindus not allowed beyond a point. I don't think other religions make this distinction.

Ancient (2500+ years) and well maintained Temple in Madurai. Festivals throughout the year. Four identical Gopura entrance. Guidance and full security available. Supportive staffs. Visit onetime then you will keep visit. Thousand pillars museum is a must visit and great collections of statue's, coin, swords, and ancient items. Magnificent temple.

We went here for Abhishekam and Special Darshan. Amazing Darshan .. spell bound by the beauty of the Goddess. Beautiful temple - marvelous architecture. Must visit for every Hindu.

The gopurams are so beautiful, the carvings and architecture inside the temple is superb. The atmosphere is very peaceful and you feel very relaxed when you are inside the premises. Bags aren't allowed inside (locker facility available) but cameras and mobile are allowed. You can click expect the main worship area. Our experience with the temple guide was also very... More

One of the biggest temple, well maintained Security system is annoying. Vehicles are not allowed close to the entrance and hence those who need assistance to go prepared.

Architecture is too good. I did not like the special entry to see the God. Everyone should be treated equal and a common queue system should be maintained.
