The closing of the Meenashi temple is the best show in town. Shiva goes to Meenakshi quarters to spend the night. it is a very beautiful ceremony and do not miss it. It is performed every night and it is worthwhile seeing. The temple itself (16th century) is exquisite with 11 towers and 2 shrines. The hall of a 1000... More

Madurai Meenakshi temple is an old temple and it has two deities, housed in two different structures. When we enter from the south gopuram you will first have access to Meenakshi (parvati) devi temple. In front of it there is a big pond which is kept reasonably clean. If you want to have darshan, there is free darshan as well as... More

The Meenakshi Amman Temple is a must visit for travelers touring South India. The city of Madurai is well connected to all places in India by road, rail, and air. The temple is a very big one and one has to spend atleast 5 hours to have a fairly good dharsan of the main deities and a look at the... More

It may take 3-4 hrs for Darshan and wandering around. Take 50 Rs. coupon for Darshan as it is applicable for both Shiva and Meenakshi Darshan. Camera is not allowed but Mobile is allowed at a fee. Pls don't forget to visit 'Thousand Pillar Mandapam' inside the complex.

You are left speechless. Gigantism colourful gopurams. The rich interior decoration. Very living temple. Almost no tourists "Western". Pilgrims made by their rites and devotion that does not care about us or our cameras. Almost no merchants in the temple.

I was impressed by their respect and tradition. It's the oldest temple of India. You can't go inside with shoes, and although we visited it late afternoon in Sep, it was still too hot and humid. Construction / architecture amazed: colors, designs, statues, everything has its own significant. Unfortunately there are many souvenir shops inside. Only Indus can enter in... More

Madurai Meenakshi Temple is an assertion of woman's honourable place in Society. Eventhough the legend says that Sundareshwarar (Lord Shiv) came to Madurai to marry Meenakshi, brfore and after the marriage, Meenakshi, the daughter of the Pandya King, continued to rule the Pandya kingdom with Madurai as the capital. The temple's name itself asserts the superiority given to ladies. This... More
