While cell phone cameras are allowed in this temple, regular cameras are not. If you are planning to get photos inside the temple be sure to have your smart phone along. We were given a very interesting tour of the temple by Luke who explained many aspects of the temple including details of the life of a temple elephant. The... More

4 gopurams, monolith pillars with sculptures. Thankfully less crowd when we visited. Tank (gundam) within the temple complex.

The temple is nice and have historical significance. It's a big temple, and situated in the heart of city. It is Nice but commercialized. The Darshan of Goddess could be done easily, but they create small queues. For which, people want to go through VIP Darshan, which could have been avoided, and could be attended for free.

Meenakshi amman idol carved using a green stone (believed to be emerald) is very attractive, we feel eternal radiance. Lot of carvings with complex curves and designs can be seen on the pillars, walls. A recently painted rotating siva lingam painted on the ceiling is good to see. Very important point to be mentioned is... the temple management is so... More

Meenakshi temple is one of the most famous temples in the south of India. Its colourful painting, the four gopuras (towers), are unique. The temple is a city by itself. Perhaps, you don`t like the many shops inside. Actually, I enjoyed the diversity a lot and like to stroll around and go for some presents for friends and family.

The Hall of 1000 pillars has two rows of pillars carved with images of yali (mythological beast with body of lion and head of an elephant), commonly used as the symbol of Nayak power. The Thousand Pillar Hall contains 985 (instead of 1000) carved pillars. The hall was built by Ariyanatha Mudaliar in 1569 and blends engineering skill and artistic... More

Beautiful temple, although crowded and with Hindu only sections. I wasn't quite sure what was going on and should have paid for a guide. I do recommend you go, BUT I very strongly recommend you stay out of the museum! Cost me 100 Rs for some carvings that had their numbers hand drawn on them. Much uglier and even less... More

Religious places, especially temples, are meant for peace and enjoyment. However, at Madurai’s Meenakshi Temple you get more than what you ask for. I visited this place with my wife for getting darshan of the goddess & god and I got more than what I asked for. This place is very well planned and you need to explore this place... More

One of the grand temples that has withstood rigors of time, and still fully operational. Divine experience, but has become somewhat commercial. One of the famous landmark architecture within the temple premises is the 1000 pillar hall. I remember seeing this in my childhood several decades back in its pristine glory. Now it is all built up and converted to a... More
