Walls oozing the charm of worshipful centuries, colorful, thronging processions, smells and sounds overpowering the senses, fascination and awe compelling me to stay. This was the most profound and authentic place i had the pleasure of visiting in India. Visited in low season, saw no other tourists.

The Minakshi-Tempel is one of the biggest and most colourfull tempel of South India. It is especially nice because it has been recently renovated. Most impressive are the big halls and long rows of beautifully stone-carved pillars (the 1000-pillar hall). On the whole the temple holds a peacefull and wellcoming atmosphere provided by the variety of the worshippers. Unfortunately cameras are... More

People say, when you live in a place, you do not much realize the importance of it's attractions. I am in the same situation now. Though Madurai is my home town, I can count the number of times I have been to Sri Meenakshi amman temple. However, every time I go to this temple, it never fails to amaze me.... More

This temple never fails to amaze. One can just stare at the architectural feats and wonder how people who walked it's pathways lived their lives. My last visit was not one I cared for as I had to fend off touts in nooks and corners waiting for prey. This time I was determined not to be trapped .But the waiting lines were ever... Let me start with a couple of 'negatives' though nothing major. First off this is a complete bare-feet temple (not even socks) and you'll be doing a lot of walking through it's vastness. Secondly this is a 'no camera' area BUT confusingly you can take photo's on your mobile phones for a small (50/-) charge! Having got those out of... More

This vast area is just mind blowing, the engraved stone pillars, the two sanctuaries, the enthusiastic and observant visitors, the wonderful stone Ganesh, found fully formed in the 17th C! Well worth a visit.

Starting from Delhi on an early morning flight to Chennai took a connecting flight to Madurai. Hired a cab for Rameshwaram and enroute was Meenakshi Amman Temple, a historic Hindu temple located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River in the temple city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to Parvati, known as Meenakshi, and her consort,... More

The temple is beautiful, the history / legend is interesting. Just be careful that you tell your guide that the price you settle on is "fixed". We had to pay an extra 200 rs per person because he took us into the sanctum sanctorium of the temple. There's also a temple elephant early in the evening, try and be there... More

First off, there was the nickle and dime experience at the temple ... pay to stow away my backpack in a locker, pay to get into the complex, pay to get into the museum, pay the shoe people who have looked after my shoes ... It was never much money, but I just got tired of reaching into my wallet.... More
