Located in the midst of the Thar Desert, these sand dunes are amongst the most famous ones in Rajasthan. Radiating laid-back vibes, Sam Sand Dunes, near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan totally enchant you with their fascinating sights. These 3km long, 1km wide and almost half a kilometer high sand dunes keep on shifting on a permanent basis. The area of the Rajasthan Sam Sand Dunes supports absolutely no plant life. The whirling air currents of this area match with those of the sandstorms in the Sahara. « less

We did not quite get to the sand dunes as just as we approached groups of men selling camel rides stood across the road blocking our car bangi g on the windows shouting camel ride . They became quite aggressive verbally when we stated we did not want a camel ride . It was made for a very uncomfortable experience... More

To get the real experience of a desert's tranquility in isolation, visit the dunes at dawn. There is no one to be seen. If you don't stay on the dunes overnight, leave at 4 a.m. from your hotel and get there in time. For camels and people, visit at dusk. It is rather crowded then.

I would suggest to visit Sam in the early mornings as there is no crowd and the weather too is cool. The jeep ride into the dunes was very good. One can spend some time on the sands which is also good for photography. We also got to see a herd of deer running across the sands.

Either Dhuri or Sam, one of the two sand dunes is a must visit. This is where the real Thar desert starts. The dunes shifting in the evenings along with the sunset are a brilliant treat to watch. The tour operators however need to concentrate on maintaining the cleanliness of the area. Must takes: Camel Safari and the Royal Thar... More

A beautiful location gone to seed. The dunes were beautiful not very long ago, but have over a period of time become a repository of filth. The rising water table due to the Indira Gandhi Canal has resulted in the growth of thorny bushes, which the locals try and remove to keep the dunes barren, but the success rate is... More

nice to spend an evening, but it was overcrowded ... !!! and i don't know what the solution for that could be ... Probably, the authorities could do something about the people selling tea, snacks, water, chips, etc ... rest all is good, just to sit on the soft sand & watch the sun set ! Overall, its a must...
