Sri Aurobindo lived in Pondicherry and used meditation and yoga to develop his theories of enlightenment. He and his follower, Mirra Alfassa, opened the ashram in 1926. She subsequently ran the ashram and also developed the experimental community, Auroville, on the outskirts of Pondicherry. Sri Aurobindo died in 1950 and Mirra, 'The Mother' died later in 1973. Their memorial chambers... More

This ashram consists of Sri Aurobindo cemetry, small bookshop and some living quarters. People do meditation around sri aurobindo cemetry which is made up with white stone and well decorated with flowers. This is a place of meditation and peace. It is very clean and peaceful. Must visiting place in Pondicherry.

It is a small Ashram of Hrishi Aurobindo. His Cemetery is kept inside and people do meditation around it. It's not like a tourist place rather a place of meditation and peace. It's absolute quite inside. Once you see the 'Samadhi' which inside the lawn, then you can proceed through other rooms (where Sri Aurobindo stayed), a library, shop and... More

Children are not allowed and hence we had to turn away from the entrance after reaching this place. The area was quiet and has a french taste to its architecture.

I had heard a lot about the Aurobindo Ashram and was looking forward to the visit there. And honestly, it was quite disappointing. The good part is that it is clean, peaceful and silent. There were quite a few people meditating and there was a vibe of calmness. However, it was also unwelcoming in a way. Majority of the ashram... More

Visitors to Punducherry may spend some time visiting this Ashram created by Sri Aurobindo and his French Devotee. It is a place of prayer and meditation, and also house a bookshop and photographic collection of Sri Auribindo. No footwear and photography allowed inside the Ashram. Has a peaceful serene atmosphere

No footwear allowed, so keep them them in free footwear stand opposite the gate. Mobile phones should be switched off. A must visit... More

The Aurobindo Ashram is a definite first on the list of every traveller to Pondicherry. It is the resting place of Shri Aurobindo & The Mother (Mira Alfassa), situated not far from the Beach Promenade & Manakula Vinayagar Temple. The Discipline & Silence that the management maintains is commendable, but the attitude towards tourists is not so good. They do... More
