Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasam beach is a beach in Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, along the Arabian Sea, part of the Indian Ocean. The word Papanasam means wash away sins. It is believed that a dip in the waters of Papanasam Beach washes away all the sins in one's life. Varkala beach is the only place in southern Kerala... More

I really liked to see all the local people going to the holy men to perform puja. I looked at it so long!! So many people with ashes of deceased relatives, so impressive. I went to sit at a holy man too when he pointed at me to come. Great experience.it is to honour your dead relatives. The offer will... More

Nice big beach and plenty go in the water to swim and jump in the surf. There are lifeguards with whistles and flags on the beach who warn people when they go too far from the safe areas. They are frequently having to do this. Strangely very few people hire the sunbeds, most people on the beach either hire just... More

During the day, (until evening) it is pretty crowded with locals. This strip of beach is perfect for a night walk. Lesser number of shops and eateries, but they are there. This is more easily accessible compared to the north cliff, and it is better to enter and leave the beach this way if you have a vehicle.

This was the nearest beach to our hotel and we spent a lot of time here eating and relaxing and just people watching. The sounds from nearby Temple, locals carrying out their religious rituals at the edge of the sea and the bright colours of the ladies clothes together with the smell of the tandoori ovens in the restaurants awakened... Not really fantastic as you can read, it's small and sometimes crowdy. You can find perfect long, almost empty beach to the north from Papasnanam. It's harder to get there, but it's worth it.

Wonderful beach, very clean and beautiful. Amazing view of sunset. One can spend whole day here as good food with a great view of sea is available in the shacks on the beach. There are few small streams of natural springs erupting from the cliff. A bath in those sprint will reenergizes you.
