There are cute little monkeys all around just don't feed them. They hang out near humans like we are invisible. It is a good place to visit since the money they collect from fares are supposed to protect the wildlife of Periyar. People are very friendly.

A very dense forest.... Very scenic.... Spotting animals during rains is tough because animal need not come to lake for drinking as they have many temporary water bodies... Best time January February Trekking boating can be done....

Too many noisy tourists, I think the animals have run away a long time ago. There were just too many people and they were of the package tourist variety, no sense of why they were there in the first place.

The one and half hour boat ride was superb. Tranquil surroundings, trees in various hues, bird nests in middle of the lake and deer sighting on the shore left us spellbound. For the first time in India, I saw boat with over 100 people having life vest for every individual and the staff made everyone wear them.

Unless you have not seen enough birds and deer, you could skip this park. The probability of seeing Indian buffalo, tigers or other large animals will be near zero. The lines for the boat safaris in the early morning were large and lots of pushing and shoving. You get assigned seats so why the rush? Also you are not supposed... More

The noisy rabble here means that only the hopelessly optimistic would expect to see anything at all. A queue of about 200 people means a long wait for a bus to take you to a "nature reserve" where everyone is shouting and joking; it's the sort of behaviour you';d adopt were you deliberately trying to scare animals away. At the... More

All other National parks mostly offer Jungle safaris through Jeeps or Elephants and on land. This one is unique since the jungle tour through Periyar Tiger Reserve is by boat. The experience is very nice and must do if in Thekkady. The waters of Periyar river are deep and the jungle is very dense. The atmosphere is very tranquil. One... More

Enjoyed a great boat trip round the lake. We saw pretty much everything but elephants and tigers, which is not surpising.

Its an excellent program run by the Kerala Forest Department and we enjoyed it to the core. Its a 3 hour , 6 to 7 km trek inside the periyar national park. We were provided leech protection socks and a wonderful guide to show us around the forest and it was memorable experience and we spotted some bisons enroute.
