This was South India's earliest European church, dating back to the 16th century. It was originally a Catholic church under the Portuguese and the explorer Vasco da Gama was initially buried here, before his grave was moved to Lisbon (his tombstone still remains). After the English arrived it became an Anglican Church. It has a somewhat stark, white interior but... More

St. Francis Church of South India, is the oldest European church in India. With tremendous historical significance the church was where Vasco Da Gama was initially buried. The church is only open for visitors on week days as on Sundays there is church service, which we learnt by experience. It is worth taking time off early on a weekday for... More

This is the first catholic church built in Fort Cochin by the Portugese, after Vasco De Gama arrived here in 1492. Over the years the church has undergone some renovations. There and some old inscriptions on the walls that have not been restored. A lot of old history to explore

This church is interesting as it was the first place where Vasco da Gama was buried when he died. After, his remains were sent to Lisbon, but the gravestone stayed in the church in Kochi. It is an easy church to visit as located very closed to the Chinese nets (walking distance).

There are lots of churches in Kerala but the Church of Saint Francis is one of the most historic, being built in the time that Vasco Da Gama lived there. Apart from its history there is not much of significance about St Francis's.

A microcosm of last five hundred years of Kerala history with Vasco de Gama's original grave, and many other grave inscriptions from Portugese, Dutch, and British eras. Now undergoing remodeling.

It was in this rather unasuming building that Vasco de Gama was buried. He was later dug up and taken back to Portugal but there is nevertheless significant historical importance in this building which many people simply fail to see. It is very plain and very much of it's era - nothing flash but with old punkkahs hanging from the... More

This is a small church situated in the Fort Kochi area of Ernakulam district of Kerala, where the remains of Vasco Da Gama was earlier buried. Only the tombstone can be seen these days, as he was removed to Portugal, his birthplace , earlier. Shabby , ill-kept interiors looks a bit out-of-place, considering the historical significance of the place, but... More
