Wooden pillars support the superbly crafted structure of the Jama Masjid. It is an amazing work of architecture representing evolution of Kashmir and its craftsmanship. Looking closely one can observe Tibetan (= Buddhist? = Oriental?) and Hindu influence fused with the Persian influence. A living rooftop (to cater for the snows) has now been replaced with a modern roof. It... More

This mosque is one of the ancient mosques in the city not to be missed by first time travelers. They are huge and have separate praying areas for males and females. The beautiful fountain in the centre adds a sacred significance to the mosque.

I visited the mosque during Ramadan, it's huge! I was able to walk through most of the buildings, so beautiful, walnut ceilings, carvings, men and women in prayer, don't miss it.

I was amazed by the look of this place- its unlike any mosque and the minarets are more buddhist than islamic. Due to the bandh it was closed but the walk around the periphery was so interesting. The shops were closed so it was like an exclusive visit. Very characterful area.
