We have taken advance permission as instant entry is not allowed.Previously museum was at Calico Mill and was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru but now it is here since many years. We have been alloted a guide to explain. There are nine big halls where there specimens of historical 17th and 18th Century are exhibited. The collection consits of Wall panel,... More

The textiles section of the museum has some beautiful exhibits. The focus is on the Gujarat region, though there are collections from other areas as well. The re-installed havelis around the campus are worth a look. Prior booking is essential to visit the museum. My bag, including phone and camera, were carelessly taken and dumped by the security personnel at... More

Calico museum was in my must visit list and informed my chauffeur to reach this place after the visit of Sabarmathi Ashram.Puzzled Chauffeur asked me about the location very often and said that he never knew about this museum. After reaching the museum, the guards at the gate gave me a shock and said that I need a prior permission. After explaining... This is a strange museum - the setting is gorgeous, a botanical garden and several old noble houses. But the reception is very severe, the hours of visiting very limited. You have to reserve ahead of time, as you are not allowed to visit on your own, only in a pre-planned tour group. Our guide behaved like a schoolmaster, though... More

Unfortunately, we did not book several weeks in advance. Despite our best efforts, and despite returning once again to Ahmedabad to try our luck with potential cancellations, we did not make it to either the morning or afternoon guided tour. So we believe the books that it is worthwhile. And we LOVED the folk museum that we visited instead.

You need to book a tour of this place before visiting. We had taken the afternoon tour. The morning tour shows textiles whereas the afternoon tour shows pichwais or religious paintings usually placed behind the idol at Nathdwara temple near Udaipur. The halls are not well illuminated and I wish the guide would be more friendly.

housing a wonderfully displayed collection of textiles and a few Indian paintings. The tour leader and assistants project a very stern demeanor which can be off putting. In such a beautiful place they should learn to smile.

This is not a museum showcasing "textiles" - it is a collection of religious tapestries housed in a former mansion, kept in rooms that are not well lighted. Many of the tapestires (faded, dull) show the same religious themes. Completely underwhelmed.

Fabulous collection of textiles but the Museum needs a makeover and the explanations are inadequate, so read before you go!

The Calico museum in the house of Sarabhais in Ahmedabad offers a conducted tour for a maximum of 20 tourists (on prior booking) in the morning and a religious tour for 16 in the afternoon. The officialese and timings are unchanged, but the quality of the tour has certainly deteriorated since the one we took in 2009. The audio-visual capsule... More
