Yes, it is a little touristy but the buildings and the street kind of brings you back to way back when. Shantang Jie is great fun: both on foot and by boat. We typically take our guests to Tiger Hill and then take the boat to Shantang street "tourist part": the view is really nice. You get to see the old houses from the canal point-of-view and look at local life on the terraces. The beer, post cards and playing cards...

You have to go but we were a bit disappointed - tooo touristy. Perhaps we missed something. Pingjiang Road has more character. However, the area at the start of the road is fascinating, full of local colour such as hairdressers in the street.

Shantang Jie, just north of Shi Lu, in the NW corner of Suzhou is a great little street. The initial part is quite touristy, but is very photographic during the day and particularly in the evening.

Chinese friends took us here in the evening. The lantern-lit setting, with small shops and stores along a narrow lane paved with granite blocks certainly makes you feel you're in an earlier century. Looking down the canal behind the buildings is also an unforgettable image.
