The dam is incredibly huge and just to see the size of it is enough. However, I don't think you need to spend a long time to see it, and the cruise ship excursion is pretty lengthy.

i am not considering the engineering challenges to build the dam as they will not show up in what we can see. as a visitor i would say the views and magnitude on what can be seen it is not comparable with Itaipu for example. so yes, if you are around with spare time... good to go... otherwise you can... This was one of the three excursions that we took during our Yangtze River downstream cruise. Honestly, this was my least favorite of the three. I've been to the Hoover Dam three times and I found it to be much more impressive. I did enjoy seeing how the lock system functioned. If you're into massive engineering projects, you'll love this... Myself and friend visited via a coach tour from a Yangtze Gold Cruises river cruise ('Yangtze Gold 1' cruise ship). The Three Gorges Dam is the worlds largest in length (2.3km). It is 101m in height. The project cost $30 billion. 3.5 million people were displaced by the project. The visit took me through a one-way system of escalators (upwards)... More

As they state on the tour, this dam is neither the highest or the longest, but it is incredibly impressive as a straight dam. The tour is very good (helped by our animated guide!), helping to understand the history and reasons behind the dam project. It is very interesting wandering around the exhibits, and then getting the overview from on... More

We visited the Three Gorges Dam Project on the last day of our Yangtse trip and to be honest, we were a bit disappointed. We didn't feel that we needed a whole day to see concrete and more concrete and keep having to get on and off buses to be driven to see yet more concrete. Admittedly, it was part... More

The sheer size of the Three Gorges Dam project makes my mind boggle! When you go past the villages that were relocated, brick by brick further up the mountain to allow for the dam to be built, we were left totally speechless! And the amount of time it took to build the dam, compared to how long it rakes us... More

This is an amazing engineering project. The scale of the works is staggering. I was glad there were escalators up to the top ( I would not have fancied climbing so many steps!) Take a hat, wear lots of sunscreen, you are out in the sun a long time. Definitely a "big boy's trip"

Amazing feat of building and astounding amount of concrete used to build a structure to hold back the Yangtze!! Not a family outing, quite a bit of walking and the normal sellers of trinkets, but very worth a look if you are in the area.

Only recommended if you are taking Three gorges tour. Nothing exceptional and spectacular. The only plus point is a nice short Yangtze cruise from Yichang to the dam site.
