La Portada, a must-see for Antofagasta!

We lived in Antofagasta for nearly a year and La Portada was our favorite sight! Beautiful oasis in the middle of a desolate desert, minutes from town. Nice viewing area with an... read more

I was very dissapointed that the access to the lower beach was closed. There was damage which is apparant but no sign of when or "if" it will be repaired. It is sad and unfortunate that we were unable to go down. Otherwise this view is spectacular.

We lived in Antofagasta for nearly a year and La Portada was our favorite sight! Beautiful oasis in the middle of a desolate desert, minutes from town. Nice viewing area with an outlook for pictures and restaurant onsight that serves good, althougj pricey food. If you're lucky enough to catch the vendors there, you will get nice souveniers for better... More

I had been working in Antofagasta for a little while now and everybody recommended I go to la Portada. Some coworkers and I went on a Sunday with the intentions to have a few beer and enjoy some seafood. The seafood was not as great as I had hoped for and the beer selection was minimal. Therefore if you are... More

Although the natural monument is falling down, is a great landscape and view to everyone that likes God's creation and the wildlife in its surroundings, near there is a great museum given by the municipality that teaches about the wildlife and history about the ocean and of course natural monuments and their concern to keep them safe.

Its the most famous place in antofagasta, so basically a must if your in the city. not that close to the center, but there are buses and taxis that can take you. getting to the place itself is free, but you cannot get near it in anyway, the path is blocked so all you get is a distant view, good... Easy to get to from Antofagasta city. The views both south and north of this point really drive home the point of the isolation and hostile coast that seafarers of centuries past faced in exploring this new world. It is worth the contemplation.

La Portada - product of seawater abrasive activity together with adjacent cliffs, roaring ocean and sounds of cormorant is a place which is necessary to visit, if you are in Antofagasta. One feels highly small in comparison with the infinite power of nature. Go and see!

This rock formation is more than great! It is 42 meters tall and 70 wide; so it is huge.... but you get to see it from far; still it is worth it! You should definitely visit the museum next to it so they explain you everything about it; you will fall in love... so many secrets!
