Huge queues the August weekend that we went with lots of bus tour passengers, so get there early and book a ticket. We were disappointed that there was no little museum to spend a while discovering the history of the line - I suppose they want you to buy a book! The cog railway has many steam engines as well... The journey was leisurely with wonderful views. The ride in the carriage next to the locomotive was a bit jolty. There was a little bit of commentary over the onboard PA system but only in German.

Very scenic trip to the top of the mountain. Stunning views from the top. Was rather expensive though at 33 Euros per person.

The railway is quaint and good fun, but the large café/restaurant at the top is ugly and the surrounding landscape not much better. The fine view (weather permitting) doesn't quite make up for the poor quality experience at the top and the long, tedious wait for empty spaces on the return train.

The cog railway tickets are available from the ticket office in St Wolfgang. The train departs every hour or so. The trip on the train is steep, offering amazing views and at times it feels as if the train is almost fully vertical. The trip is relatively expensive. We started the day in good sunshine but by the time we... More

The views are superb!!!!!!!! the hiking is good but one should have on hiking shoes not street shoes as we saw. Food is good and not too pricey. Hiking available at the top and also for those who want to hike down or even go half way.

Went on the train to see the wonderful views of the mountains as it was a clear day the views were really clear and very good to get right to top you then have to walk up a bit where there is a restaurant and you can see the drop from there.

This was one of our best experiences whilst exploring the Salzkammergut –as the highest accessible point in the region, the vistas from above are nothing short of breathtaking. We arrived at the St Wolfgang Schaefbergbahn stop by boat from St Gilgen, and boarded the 1pm train. It’s an enjoyable experience in this little train making its way leisurely up the... More

Fantastic - a genuine marvel of engineering, without which we would never have managed the climb and missed the panoramic wonderland. Biggest regret? - not staying at the top overnight to see the sunset.
