The train ride up is spectacular, though some stretches can be a bit scary for people who are afraid of heights as the train goes on a very narrow path next to big drops at some points. It is easy to take pictures during the ride. Visibility at the top can be unpredictable, changing quite quickly, and unfortunately the video... More

This cog railway goes up the side of the mountain, and keeps going up! The views are spectacular and it is easy to take pics from the train cars. Make sure you reserve your down-ticket immediately on arriving on top. Stay for a beer or apfel strudel at the restaurants on the top.

It was a hot clear day and we made our way through St Wolfgang which was beautiful. We had parked just near the information centre on the other side of the village which gave us a pleasant walk to the station, but you can park next to it. Buying a family ticket was easy and we didn't have to queue... More

Life is full of choices. When vacationing in the beautiful, peaceful resort of St Wolfgangsee one of the more complicated choices is whether you want to walk up the Schafburg Mountain or take the steam train up. Time and effort versus expense. Either way provides plenty of photo ops. Walking up and down appeared time expensive to me though my... More

A great trip up the Schafberg Mountain on this little train, bit jerky on the way down. Once up there there are outstanding views on a clear day but it can be rather windy. Certainly worth doing on a good day, would be useless if it was low cloud.

We enjoyed the trip with the steam engine, mainly our 5 year old son. With kids it's really worth to experience this.

The first time I saw locomotives like the one that takes the tourists to the top of the Schafberg was in 1959. By then in LINZ on the Danube they had made a monument to such iconic coal burning engines yet in GRAZ in Steirmark, locomotives with funnels topped with spark supressers and still having the appearance of those trains... Great day out to a simply awesome location. Take the train up in the morning and have lunch on top of the mountain - views are simply stunning.

This is a great trip, but really needs to be done on a sunny day - clouds can lurk round the top of the Schafberg otherwise which would spoil the experience entirely. The train doesn't quite get to the top - you have a walk the final couple of hundred metres, but it's well worth while doing so, as the... More
