A 30 minute ride by rack and pinion railway takes you to stunning 360degree views of the area. Clever system to book your return seat takes the stress out of the 'will I, won't I?' Get a seat scenario. Definitely recommended on a clear day.

We had a clear day for our trip up the cog railway; the view were amazing. This also made the train cars pretty packed, though; I felt a bit like a sardine in a can. There's not a lot to do at the top of the mountain beyond looking at the views and eating at the gasthouse. In retrospect, I... More

We enjoyed a wonderful trip on the Cog railway. Great view from the summit. Spend time to really soak in the view and take lots of photos as you will not believe its beauty. Make sure you book your return seat though.

This sturdy cog railway was running even during a snowstorm at the top which is impressive in itself. However - be sure to check out the Schafberg webcam before going up. If it's raining down in St. Wolfgang or there are low lying clouds, it's going to be poor visibility up there which makes your trip and money a waste.... More

We were looking forward to a great mountaintop view. The ride up was scenic and steep. Unfortunately as we neared the top we entered the clouds and sightseeing immediately ceased. Luckily we enjoyed beverages and a bite to eat at an outdoor café at the peak. The food was good and very reasonably priced. All in all the trip up... More

We decided to hike up and take the railway down. If you are in good shape and enjoy a steep hike, it is well worth it. The locals say it takes 3 1/2 hours to walk up but this must be at a very slow pace, as it took us a little over 2 hours, and this includes getting lost... More

Loved the ride on the train and the views were amazing. Very cold and cloudy but then you would expect that as you are Si high up. We were lucky as the cloud cleared while we were up there.

Huge queues the August weekend that we went with lots of bus tour passengers, so get there early and book a ticket. We were disappointed that there was no little museum to spend a while discovering the history of the line - I suppose they want you to buy a book! The cog railway has many steam engines as well...
