Focus in two principal collections is a natural history department dedicated to Chile's native fauna and flora; and an archaeological department offering a permanent display related to the indigenous peoples of Northern Chile, the Aconcagua region and the Mapuche in the south of the country. The museum also houses one of the most important collections in the world related to Easter Island, including the only genuine Moai statue in the whole of continental Chile, outside in the museum garden. Guided tours are available in both Spanish and English. « less

Fonck museum is a small, but very interesting museum of archeology. It is organized by Chilean peoples and there is a special section on the Rapa Nui. There is also a whole floor of bugs and local animals. The only drawback is that not everything is translated into English, so there are valuable snippets of information only Spanish speakers (or... This was an unexpected, but very worthwhile stop during my trip to Vina del Mar. The Fonck Museum not only has one of the few moai heads outside of Easter Island, but a nice little exhibit devoted to moai culture. If you're in Vina Del Mar and want to take a break from the beaches and restaurants, you should go... More

This is the place to see in Viña, much more so than the Flower Clock or the Wulff Castle or the casino. There is a nice mansion in the middle of a beautiful park and the moai stands at the entrance. Unfortunately, I was running short of time and didn't go inside.

Very small natural history museum. Friendly staff. Best feature though, is the moai in front of the museum.

We didn't tour the museum, but examined and photographed th moai outside it. Because it's outside it's free. It was impressive even if it was one of the smaller ones.

In this place you find several samples of chilean history, related to Isla de la Pascua and other regions - that part is very interesting. But... the best are the butterflies and other insects at he second floor. What wake up memories, in fact, are the old toys, from several countries: wonderful! I could'nt resist and, at the end, bought... More

This museum was pretty interesting as it spoke of the native cultures of Easter Island and gives some general background for Chilean culture in general. We spent about an hour there and their stuffed animals are unique for the most part, however the museum in and of itself is pretty small. As a general back-drop to understanding Vina Del Mar,... It's quite small, but everything is so neat and organised that made me spend like 2 hours inside the building, reading everything. There's even a mummy inside the place! All the Pre-Columbian ceramics are also incredible! The Moai Statue outside the building is astonishing! :) If you are around, make a stop and check it out!

There was a lot here on Easter Island, for sure, but also about indigenous life in other parts of Chile. I loved it--I think it would be less accessible for people who do not read Spanish. Not everything is translated.

Fonck Museum, the main building is closed at the moment after the 2010 earthquake, just is worth going there to see the big cracks of the building to have an idea of the power of the shake. Next to it is a small house with a permanent exposition of Easter Island. Very good, small but enough. Cheap also. Friendly staff.... More
