If you are in Jeddah, probably the safest city with some exceptions, you must visit Balad which holds architecture going back more than 300 years old. It reflects the true state of Jeddah old city and people are quite decent. However, expats must understand their culture and cover up top to bottom (full length cloths).

I liked the spirit of traditional/old looking roads and buildings of that area almost being the same like long, long time ago. The windows have sun protection fixed from outside characteristic for Middle East. There are now lot of souks with small shops selling souvenirs and offering different services to the citizens and visitors.

I was lucky enough to be in town during the Ramadan festival with all the street vendors in the Balad old town area. As one of the very few Europeans wandering around I experienced the well known Islamic hospitality towards travellers and had a wonderful time. This area is 'under refurbishment' and is in a ramshackle state at the moment.

Al-Balad, the historic centre of Jeddah, literally translates as 'The City' and was founded in the 7th century. Though Al-Balad's original city walls came down in the 1940s, its unique architecture remains. From the old city gates and historic mosques to a variety of traditional markets (souks), there's plenty to see and do in the Al-Balad section of Jeddah. Al-Balad... More

A Shopper's option. If you are interested in purchasing stuffs in reasonable prices and solution for bank, Gold needs all in one place. Crowded much in weekend evenings, but will be fun to see what you get here. Good place to shop for all.

Balad has some great old buildings and a lot of character, most people go for the shops, there are bargains to be had. The gold and silver areas are well worth a visit. The shops are cheaper than the Malls
