If you're going to see one crusader castle in Syria, this is the obvious choice. It's an hour drive or less from Homs, is huge, and in fairly good condition. I hired a local guide at the base of the castle--it was not the most fabulous tour I had in Syria, but was worth the five-bucks, especially for the crash... more

Krac the des Chevaliers is the ruin of a huge Crusader castle in Syria. With it's thick walls it very much resembles a fortress, not so much the castle homes of noble families that are frequently found in Europe.
