The 3hrs on the mekong (2hrs up and 1 down) was the best part of this trip. Really nice, scenic and relaxing river. The caves were a waste. Oh and there is an admission fee to enter the caves of 20,000 kip when you arrive. Our booking agent didnt mention this. Really steep stairs to climb to make it to... More

We took the boat tour that our hotel booked for us. It was $25USD each. It was great to be on the river for a few hours, seeing jungle and life on the river. We stopped for about 20 mins at a little place that sold rice whiskey, scarves etc. There was a small temple too. Little kids were cute... More

We arrived by our AVRLaos rented van+driver around noon, immersing ourselves in the picturesque scenery while having lunch at the restaurant by the river first before taking the short 10 minutes ride across the river to the caves. The lower cave is like what a lot of others have described, lots of various Buddha statues in various cluster, poses and... More

It's a lot of hassle and a long day with what feels like little reward, culturally I understand the significance but spare yourself the uncomfortable ride, stair trips and let down. It's not a must see, photos do it justice

After sitting down on a boat the climb up to the top cave was welcomed and a good view across the wide Mekong river. For a small fee you can hire a torch to see more within that cave or bring your own. Once you've seen one or two figures then kids can get quickly bored of yet more and... More

Thanks to reviews here I was well prepared to not to expect too much here. It is about the boat trip, which can be fantastic (our boat provider was great, ticket to cave included, no surprises). There are 2 caves, filled with buddha statues of all sizes, it is the sheer number that makes this quite impressive and fun to... More

The cruise along the Mekong river was by far the best part of this trip .Sit back and enjoy the ride .I can't help thinking this was one of those contrived package holiday tourist trips to take advantage /exploit some very small caves used as a Wat and storage space for numerous Buddahs moved from the town .The bottom cave... Small caves, yes, spiritually important to the community, yes, long journey to get there, yes, worth it, yes! Don't go expecting some enormous cavern (they are grottoes not caves) and you will not be disappointed! it's a glorious journey up the mekong (if you keep going _ you enter Thailand) and even tho the caves are small, there is a... We had only a few days in Luang Prabang, and visiting this cave took over four hours, with the long boat ride. Ultimately I don't think it was worth it for us, as we missed other attractions to visit the caves.
