Owner description: Tamarind Restaurant in Luang Prabang offers day and evening cooking classes in open air pavilions overlooking lily ponds just outside of town. Participants in day classes are taken there after a visit to the fascinating main market, where they are introduced to the unusual and intriguing ingredients that are the basis of Lao cuisine. From there it is off to Tamarind Gardens to cook Lao dishes in the authentic Lao style. Evening classes are shorter, and head directly at the cooking school. Individual work stations allow you to follow the instructions of an entertaining and informative Lao teacher, whilst a bevy of staff clean up after you. The sessions end with a sumptuous meal, where you eat the fruits of your labours! Transport to and from Tamarind Restaurant and recipe book all included. Vegetarians welcome.

We booked the morning class which starts at 9am with a walk through the local market. This was a great start as the "chef" explains to you all the typical food. You can purchase items for yourself there and the chef helps you in getting the best quality and price. The location of the following cooking class is just amazing... More

We took what was rated the best cooking class in town. Well, it was right outside of town – you are taken by a tuk tuk from the restaurant to a true classroom. Here you cook a set of dishes and have a few choices on variations. The instructor was great, but the food was only ok. Unfortunately, you don't... More

I had a great time during the cooking class. Although, Im not much into Lao cuisine, but I thoroughly enjoyed my creations. The chef was very good. The venue of the cooking lesson was spectacular with the waterlilies in the pond. Would definitely recommend this.

We thoroughly enjoyed the time spent at the Tamarind cooking course. It was very well organized and professionally run. The market visit was interesting and the garden setting for the course beautiful. This was a hands-on course and we each got to make each item. The instructions were clear and the supervision excellent, provided with a good sense of humor.... More

If you have an evening (or day) to spare during your stay in Luang Prabang, we highly recommend taking this cooking course! We did the night one (didn't have time for the day course which includes a trip to the food market) and it was exceptional! We met at the restaurant and then got shuttled by tuk-tuk to the cooking... We had lovely time there. Started with trip to local market then to the kitchen. Kitchen has nice garden and fully equipped. Instruction was great and ample assistance when you needed. Highly recommend.

Since Thailand I have been searching for a cooking course. Tamarind was worth the wait! The food was unique and full of flavor, but should be relatively easy to make at home. Not only did Joy demonstrate what we were going to reproduce, but he and his assistant walked around offering help if need be. Each recipe was clearly written... More

We thoroughly enjoyed the Tamarind cooking class. They drive you to a house outside of town, where the cooking class takes place in a beautiful garden setting. They show you how to cook a variety of dishes, including some with really interesting techniques (e.g. lemongrass stuffed with chicken and fish in banana leaf) using traditional Laos cooking equipment. At the... More

Expectations were high for the Tamarind course and they did not disappoint. Having met at the restaurant in Luang Prabang we were transported to their purpose built and equipped cookery school. All participants had their own work station and brazier type cooker. The chef took us through the preparation of 4 dishes. His explanation, demonstration and general delivery were first... More

We did the evening cooking class and it was fantastic!. We arrived at the Tamarind restaurant and then transferred to the cooking school out of town. We cooked several dishes and none disappointed . The instructing chef was great and very funny we had a ball. Once we had prepared our meal we sat down and shared our meal with... More
