Previously known as ‘Tiger Trail Elephant Camp’ and ‘Elephant Park Project’ and ‘Elephant XL’, Elephant Village was first located opposite the Lao Spirit Resort on the Nam Khan River. We are currently located next to the village Ban Xieng Lom. Elephant Village focuses on three objectives:1. “Saving Elephants” 2. “Community Support”3. “Nature Preservation”We take elephants out of the very dangerous logging industry and provide them with an alternative way of earning their income. We try to help the elephants which desperately need help the most. For example, older elephants and elephants which have injuries due to accidents. We currently have 12 elephants in our care. They include an 80 year old female (who has since died of old age), a 63 year old female who is nearly blind in both eyes and a 38 year old female who is completely blind in the right eye. Our most recently acquired elephant is a disabled female who was injured when she stepped on a ‘UXO’ (Un-Exploded Ordinance) some years ago. « less

We didn't make the reservation beforehand and came on scooters through 15km unsaved road at about 1pm. The facilities are opened at least until 4pm as is stated on web site. So I imagined that there should be some was for us to do something. We spoke to several people on the ground they just commented that it was a... More

Very nice place. Very good idea. When they started! But today - we got the feeling, that success made them greedy. All the statements and promises posted, sound fake. The mahuts don't love there elephants. We found two elephants bleeding from mahut treatment. Most of the time, we were sitting around waiting. Poor trip on elephant back - shorter than promised.... Went for the half day trip from L-P which was to include a full one hour elephant ride for 42 USD. The setting is great with magnificent views and is a pleasure to meet the elephants. I am unsure this is truly a sanctuary as they elephants are worked quite hard and the 'trek' was a simple repetitive loop through... More

We arrived at 9:00 am and sat around for over two hours waiting for a turn to ride the elephants. The elephants are overworked, and when they began loud moaning at 2:00 pm after hours of giving rides, the tour guide simply laughed and remarked that the elephants were tired. Yet, no one made an effort to give the animals... More

There were 3 of us travelling together and booked a trip to Elephant Village...sold to us in Luang Prabang. We were told we would have 1hour elephant ride, 1 hour individual mahout training each, a visit to the elephant hospital (which is just a closed shed with nothing, and certainly no elephants, inside it) and each person could bath the... Well planned and excellently executed trip to the sanctuary, booked through Al Lao Travel, opposite Luang Prabang Bakery Guesthouse. Enjoyed being Mahout, riding at the neck of the elephant and joining them for a bath. Wonderful experience to cherish. More

always wanted to ride an elephant. Took me many hours of contemplation to decide to go for it. Mainly because of Trip advisor and the word of Sanctuary. I looked into the eyes of this amazing animal and realized I should not have done so. We booked for 2 days which turned out to be a total of 12 hrs........ More

Very good organization. Nice village with all accomodations. The concept of the protection of the elephant is a very good idea. The lao guide " Monkone" is professionnal and he pass a very good view of this country. More

Really nice and close encounter with the elephants, possible to ride without saddle straight on the neck of the hugh animal. It's an experience of a life time. In the afternoon you go down to the mekong river for a bath on the back of the elephants. They'll give ya som great slashes with their trunks. Go for the full... More

We boyfriend and I just returned from the 2 day Mahout experience and it was incredible. Having read review which mentioned much waiting around and not a lot of time with the elephants we were open minded but we spend atleast 2 hours riding the elephants, 2 out of 3 rides on the neck and with an elephant each. The... More
