I suggest you will need decent footwear, and a camera. You can park at the bottom of the hill and walk 2km or drive up and park, although space can be limited at busy times - we visited on Thursday morning and it was almost empty. There is not a lot of the fortress left, but what remains gives a... More

I found the fortress disappointing...I expect that there are more left of it, expected to find more history...I expected to see more artefacts and historical data. Anyway, the autumn views from the top were amazing.

Very nice location and small church. Very little remains of the fortress itself, although you can understand the strategic location, commanding the valley below. Recommend to climb up the hill to the top of the fortress in order to have great photos of the church. The church builing is impressiv, although the interior frescoes were virtually destroyed by the Turks.... More

Hard to access - to get there you have to walk 2 km outside of the town, or drive with a car (but there is not much space to park). The fortress is renovated and VERY beautiful. If you are lucky, the church will be open and you can see really cool stuff inside. The view from outside is also... More

This was a very nice find right outside of Plovdiv. Highly recommend it as the views are breathtaking and picturesque! Loved it!

Most people arrive here to visit Asen Fortess, but the real jewel is this little Church clinging to the rock: perfectly maintained and conserved

Hired a taxi for the day to see various sights outside of Plovdiv. The fortress offers good views and has interesting chapels. If you have mobility problems this is not set up for you.

The road on the way to the fortress is in bad shape, so be prepared for a bit of a walk. Once there however, the location and the fortress is amazing. Bring your camera and hope for a clear day.

We detoured to go to this site on our way to the Bachkovo Monastery as we could see the fortress ruins and church on the mountainside which was dramatic. The grouchy women at the front entrance were not a bonus feature and the views were ok from the top. The old church had swooping mudswallows in it which gave it... More

This small fortress is placed on the steep rock over the main road from Plovdiv to Smolyan. The sight from above is impressive.
