An interesting visit to a beautiful monastery.

Bachkovo monastery was a pleasant surprise. Beautiful surounding and a church with old icons. Virgin Mary's icon also attracts many believers.

This Monastery is the second one in Bulgaria for dimension. Is a little Jewel in a quiet place with wonderful paintings. As usual in Bulgaria you can take pictures only in the outside: for the inside you have to rely on your memory and some postcards sold by the Monastery shop.. When you're thirsty, you can drink directly from the... More

As we arrived my partner and I were a little worried at the were what seemed like 100 stalls selling rubbish on the way up to the monastery. Thankfully the monastery was not like this and there were already quite a few tourists milling round. The monastery is in a lovely setting and the the colourful frescos are worth seeing.... More

I did this on a day tour from Plovdiv on the way to Wonderful Bridges. It's a very pretty place, and beautiful inside. Popular with locals. There is a reputedly miraculous relic inside on the right as you enter.

We stopped at the Bachkovo Monastery coming back to Sofia from Pamporovo. This monastery is the second biggest monastery in Bulgaria after the Rila Monastery. Its location is much less remote, it is not far from Plovdiv, just after the town of Asenovgrad. It was not a planned visit, we just saw many cars parked on the side of the... More

After Rila, Bachkovo Monastery was the next most impressive. The beautifully painted interiors and exteriors of the monastery buildings were engaging as was watching the many families on Sunday outings enjoying the grounds. Below the monastery were many vendors and food stalls. We had a particularly delicious lunch as one of the grilling places.

We visited this monastry on a Sunday against the recommandation of the locals. It was indeed quite busy, but it was very interesting to experience why the locals visited. Being Sunday, we experienced the traditional blessing of the children, something we would have missed on a weekday.

As a very well traveled family it is wonderful to stumble upon a gem of a sight. This sleepy monastery (there was only one tour group when we arrived) felt austere and eerie. The interior is small and manageable, the church was so strange that my girls didn't make a sound when we entered and the burning candles and motionless... More

The monastery is free to visit and a wonderfully serene and spiritual place. It is a 30-40 minute bus journey from Plovdiv's Rhodopi bus station towards Smolyan (one bus an hour, on the hour). Getting the correct bus ticket was the most difficult part! Certainly worth a half-day trip from Plovdiv.

Bachkovo is the second largest monastery in Bulgaria and it's perhaps even more beautiful than Rila monastery. If you are a spiritual person, visit this place regardless of your religion. There's definitely something magical about it. I strongly recommend visiting their official website in advance (http://www.bachkovskimanastir.com/en/) and reading the history of the place - it is really interesting! P.S. They... More
