I love this place! Yes, there are restaurants and vendors vying for your money but hey, it's not Lourdes or other heavily frequented and touristy religious sites. I was there on a Wednesday and I felt like I had the place relatively to myself. I hiked up the nature trail adjacent to the series of chapels along the path after... More

This tour is intended to visit special monasteries buildings, frescoes and how life is running in such a place. Half an hour of easy drive, brings you back on timeline, to a calm and pastoral atmosphere, out of the noisy modern life. For me as a Jew, the visit was especially exciting. Two bishops who saved thousands of Bulgarian Jews... More

Bypass the shops and get to the peaceful and quiet Monastery. If you want to step back in time visit the refectory with the amazing painted ceiling! The stone table under the ceiling is almost as amazing! Though you pay a bit extra, it is well worth doing. The ceiling has multiple roundel paintings connected by vines that traces the... More

Bachkovo Monestery is about half an hour by car / taxi from Plovdiv. The monestery has some beautiful frescos but sadly you are not allowed to take photos, There is a small church to visit and you can buy candles to light for a few stotinkis. When you come down from the monestery there are some cafes and market stalls.... More

There are better examples around, a long uphill walk through junk sellers precedes the Monastery which as usual no photo's are allowed. WHY?

I liked the Monastery very much, because it has a lot of small shops from where you can buy lots of useful staff, both for everyday use and as Souvenirs! Plus, there are some places where you can have a coffee and relax, inhale clean air, and then the Monastery is so likeable! OK, I disliked the fact that someone... More

The building is very old and quite impressive, but I was was quite surprised to see the holy fathers being driven around in luxury cars (?!?!?!!!) I was even more surprised to hear a sexist remark from the priest. Notwithstanding the monks, it is interesting to see, even though it is overfilled with tourists and you can't get a decent... More

We were determined to visit this place and were not disappointed as it was tranquil etc etc. There are lots of craft stalls on the road up [A great place to do local shopping] and the village of Bachkovo itself looked so delightful being located next to a river. We had a great meal at the main restaurant you can... More
