Thracian Gold, Roman and some Greek

If you haven't been to the Archaeological museum in Plovdiv you must go! It is renovated and you can see golden and bronze artifacts dating couple of thousand years ago. They have preserved some of the mosaics and marble sculptures that are handcrafted by some of the masters of that time!!!

Some really fine treasures - especially the Thracian gold goblets - extremely well laid out with clear explanation (in good English as well as Bulgarian) of the many cultures and civilisations who have left their mark in this area. Some beautiful objects, well displayed.

This petite museum has one of the best displays of Thracian gold outside of Sophia. It doesn't take long and there were very few other visitors, but it's worth a quick look. It would help if there were a few other languages on the displays, but the artifacts speak for themselves! Like the others have said, no photos and unfortunately... More

The archaeological museum has a wonderful selection of artifacts from Thracian times through to medieval ages. Predominantly Thracian, Greek and Roman objects chart the development of Plovdiv through the ages and there are some stunning displays. Its a real shame that no photography is allowed despite as other reviewers have noted, but apart from this its well worth a visit.

If you are in Plovdiv the archaeological museum is really worth a visit. Very interesting and rich material, impressive for all kinds of visitors. It's really a pity that you're not allowed to take pictures: as no English or French catalogue book is available (but also Bulgarian), you won't remember anything of your visit, unless you write some notes and... If you are at all interested in archaeology then you should visit, entrance is the standard 5 levs and the exhibits are well presented with signage in English . They have a range of artefacts from all the different periods right back to the Neolithic and some stunning gold treasures. There are toilets but no cafe, and the staff were... More

The displays of archaeological artifacts are breathtaking - They really have some amazing items. However my visit was tarnished by rude brutish security. There was no visible no-photo signs in any room, so when I tried to photograph the displays as I have done in museums before, I was quite angrily and rudely shouted at by one guard who came... More

One of my favourite museums ever. A total of 4-5 rooms offering very concise and to-the-point information about Plovdiv. The jewel in the crown definitely is the Panagyurishte treasure which will make your head spin and is well worth visiting for in itself.

bette than what I expeted. I expected an old museum smelling like dust and collection presented with little or very academic presentation in Bulgarian only, but not at all. Presentationsare in English and quite accessible.
