I think the best part of the cathedral is that they left half of it in ruins (result of an earthquake). The entrance to the ruins is from the side and very cheap, definitely worth visiting. The visit takes you about 15 to 20 minutes.

Lovely gardens and architecture. Everything was cozy and tastefully done.

The church of course was free but the musuem was only Q3 and had a fair amount to see, including ruins. (An hour or so)

When you enter Santiago cathedral and realized that this was just a chapel of the original cathedral, you just want to quickly run to see the ruins!
For a very small feed you are allow to wonder around the magnificent ruins of gigantic cathedral. Spend time discovering the many crypts, side chapels and enjoy a well kept site almost all...

We received a lot of information from Elizabeth Bell about this newer space (nothing special) and the ruins behind it, which are magnificent. A Lenten display made fresh daily, was about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from Rev chapter 6.

Antigua has a large number of ruined convents and churches, and to get the most out of them, visit all lthe major ones because they are so astonishingly different. Santo Domingo is all gussied up for the high end tourist trade with a good restaurant, 4 star hotel, destination wedding site, a really interesting museum juxtaposing the motifs of Mayan...

We saw the Catedral with Elizabeth Bell on her tour. Her detailed description of the history of the Catedral and the melding of Maya and Catholic beliefs in Guatemala was down to earlh, fascinating and yet very academically rigorous. The ruins beyond the modern chapel are breathtaking.
