The shuttle for Pacaya volcano picked us all up promptly at 2:30 (not bad for central American time) and went around to pick up as many passengers as would fit in the shuttle, which was basically a minivan like they have on those shows “18 kids and counting.” But in those shows, they have two vans. Well, we managed to... more

The trip to climb the Pacaya Volcano was not billed as dangerous or very arduous. It was! My husband and I are both in our 60s and in good shape but this was the most dangerous and difficult adventure we have ever taken part in. The climb is steep to start with (I work out every day and I was... more

While in Antigua last week we decided to try out the Picaya Volano hike. It was very easy to arrange a cheap tour in Antigua and it ended up costing us $10 per person with Silva Travel. The volcano itself was much cooler than I expected. Lava was gushing out of the side and we were able to come within... more

After arriving into Guatemala City airport, we went straight to Pacaya Volcano. Pacaya Volcano is great for experiencing lava flows up close. You need to purchase a ticket at the turn off of the highway onto the road up to the volcano. There are people wanting you to hire them for your guide here. We decided to hike to the... more

Rather than do the day trip with hundreds of other travellers to the vocano, you can do an overnight camp to lava with a caompany called OX, based in Antigua. You need to note a few things before you visit them. The owner Victor, an american guy, is very pushy and money orientated. Try not to deal with him -... more

If you are going to do this hike up the volcano, make sure you have an experienced guide, and are in a large(ish) group, to avoid trouble. Also, I recommend boots, as my sneakers just didnt quite cut it. The hike to the sumit was fine, but the cutting across the volcanic rock to get to the lava flow was... more

If you ever have the opportunity, climb Vulcan Pacaya and camp overnight. I did the tour with my two daughters through Outdoor excursions - OX (www.guatemalavolcano.com) They run a very professional tour where you hike to the base of the volcano, set up your campsite and watch the sunset, and then after dark hike to the lava field. Our guide,... more

What an amazing experience to get that close to a lava flow! Yes, the hike was strenuous at times, but take your time. Yes, a lot of people cut their ankles on the lava beds, but don't wear shorts. Yes, it was freezing with incredibly high winds at the top, but wear a jacket. It amazed me how many people... more

After reading the reviews we decided to take a tour to the volcano. I am 41 and my boyfriend 48, we were the only people over 25 on the tour which would not be a problem but let me say that if you are not in amazing shape, do not do this one!! On the way up, there are horses... more

I went on a group to this amazing place near Antigua. the landscape is beautiful, the hiking is easy and with incredible views, I saw lava as well. It seems to be a safe place to visit, lots of tourists. The only bad thing is that they should have a better visitor center to take care of their tourists.... Anyways... more
